Hey Gents,
My buddy has a '97 Yamaha 40 horse jet that's goverened to 35 horse because of Alaska's HP restrictions.
Any idea how it's goverened and how to reverse it?

Thanks,
HD

Jet motors just loose HP through the jet, they are not as efficient at transferring the hp.

I know. But this motor is governed down from 40 to 35 to meet Alaska's 35 HP limit for the Kenai River.

I am trying to figure out how it is governed and how to get it back to 40 HP.

Thanks,

We need more information. Since Yamaha doesn't market outboards to specific rivers around the world, can your buddy contact the shop or marina that modified his motor to meet local requirments? Does your water patrol look at hp at the powerhead or at the pump, is it a 2 or 4 stroke, whats the model #, 40hp at the powerhead or pump, what rpm is it operating at, what size impeller?

I would imaging that the motor was governed to 35 hp by use of a label.

By virtue of having mounted to a jet knocks that HP way way down...... in all actuality that motor might be a 50 + HP at the head and only making 35 at the jet.

It's a 40MJHW. HP is supposed to be limited to 35 at the shaft, not jet output. It was supposedly governed at whatever dealer it was originally purchased at. It's common up here. Just wondering how to undo it if possible.

Looks like a 1998 40/28hp. Strange that they don't factor in the 30% pump loss on your hp up there. If it's common to de-tune motors to meet local regs, why not just call a local dealer, tell them you just purchased a 40hp on ebay and you would like to know what they would have to do to make your motor legal, then undo it.

Thanks for the tip. It is strange how they restrict HP to actual shaft HP and not jet output.

Let us know what you find out, could be as simple as them adjusting the linkage so that the throttle plates don't open all the way.
