Do you pump it out without taking out the drain plug, or do you forget the pumping and take off the plug, or do you do a combination of both?

I was told that it's best to take out the plug so all the gunk can get out and drain. All the gunk usually won't come out if you just suck it out.

On my Larson I/0 I had an old shallow baking pan to catch the oil. About 8 x 12 x 3 deep. Was still messy, but worked OK. Don't know how much room you have under there.

Jeff

If you have the newer dipstick tube, there is a fitting on the end of it. If you warm the engine and suck it out with the pump that fits this fitting, you will get as much out as is going to come out. That tube is nearly right on the bottom.

I just outfitted the Ski Supreme that was a pain in the butt to drain the oil, with a suction system by putting a fitting on the drain plug, running a peice of hose up to the top of the engine and putting a hose fitting on the other end that would fit the type of pump I mentioned above. Works like a champ, and sucks the oil right out of the drain plug hole. Swwweeeeeet!

My notor has a tube to hook up a pump to and just pump it out. Works very good. All the I/O's I have changed the oil in have had this same tube near the oil dip stick.

Ditto pumping it out. I looked yours up and it's just an extended dipstick tube that comes close to the bottom. Some models have it attached to a fitting at the drain, others have a dedicated pump-out fitting similarly plumbed. Yours is one that could leave a bit at the bottom.

LubeDude has the best gadget fot the do-it-yourselfer. There are kits available that attach a hose to the drain and extend out the bilge drain when you drain the oil. Here's on that says it attaches to a pump. But gravity works too, just slower. Have a look here...
http://www.iboats.com/mall/index.cg...n hose&**********=193629479&*******=852242146

On my boat engine I don't have a drain plug at the bottom of the oil pan but would like to have one, sure make draining oil easy. I have to use a pump with tube in the dipstick to pump out the oil. Nothing to it, very easy to use. Take about 15 minutes to do it. Pump out oil and change oil filter and put in new oil and start engine to check oil pressure and you are done.

I too use the hand pump that threads onto the dipstick tube. It works great as long as you WARM up the engine first. SAE 40 is hard to pump when it's cold! :D

A hose runs off the pan thru the drain plug outlet on my Mercruiser 5.0 Real convienient, could be a bit faster with a larger hose, but it wont fit thru the outlet.

I went to auto zone and got a fitting that takes the place of the drain plug, it is a valve that has a hose on it, when I want to drain the oil, I shove the hose thru the drain hole in the boat and open the valve and catch the oil in a jug.. ya have to have the boat out of the water to do it this way . :D :D

Multi-viscosity oil is thinnest when it is cold. If you warm the oil up first it becomes thicker and harder to drain. My engine uses 25W-40, so I drain it cold.

My pan doesn't have a drain plug... but the dipstick tube has a threaded garden hose fitting on it. I have no choice but to pump it out the top.

And yes, SAE 30 is a nightmare to pump out cold. Never again will I forget to change the oil before I fog and antifreeze her up.

I use the trash bag method. Oil is caught in the bag. Also all the oil filter drippings are caught in the bag. Lift out, cut corner off of bag and drain into container. Toss bag. No mess. I can do it when it is cold and all the oil has drained down to the pan and no oil or anything else is left in the pan when done.

What I've found to be the Best of Both Worlds is,...

I put the remote drain on my engine when I built it,.... 3/8ths" Hyd. line....
It drained a little Slower than Death..... Changing the oil was an Overnite Experince.....

Well,......... I went,+ got Me 1 of those Ele. Oilpumps,........ Then rigged it up to the end of my drain hose,.......
Quick,.. Clean,... Oil Changes are a Snap........
I could even change it at a berth,... Hose is long enough to reach up,+ out........ Don't really need the bilge plug out........

At 50hr. changes,.... Mobil 1 15W-50 doesn't even change color......... Ayuh,..... Over-Kill,.... O Well,........

Re: How do you drain your engine oil?

A couple years ago, someone suggested the trash bag method that f_inscreenname mentions. Last year it worked great, no problem at all. This year the bag snagged on something and tore. It looked like the frickin' Exxon Valdez in my backyard.

Next time I'll pump it out the dipstick tube, like I used to. The problem I had with that method is that the pump kept coming apart and losing vacuum. Maybe it's just a cheapo.
