how do you guys drain your engine oil?

It looks like using a pan would be nearly impossible, I know they sell the siphon pumps, but do they really remove everything? I thought about removing the drain plug & screwing in an adapter with a piece of hose on it, this way I can push it though the bilge drain hole & do it that way. Just put a plug in the end when done.

Anyone else do this?

I installed one of these:

It goes in place of your pan drain.....it doesn't fit thru the transom drain though......

And use one of these:

Cold or hot, it takes only 15 pumps of the handle and a few min to drain the pan.

The pump also works REALLY good when I change the oil in my automatic trans!

Re: how do you guys drain your engine oil?

i used to take 2 heavy duty garbage bags, put 1 inside the other, and place the opening under the oil pan hole. but....one snag on something sharp let me know this wasn't a good way either. my dipstick opening is about 1/4" diameter so no way is a pump working. so i did like HT32 but adapted a longer hose to the fitting so it will go out my transom. the oil has to be hot to flow out.

Unfortunately I haven;t found a good way to do this.
My oil drain plug goes through a fitting that connects the dipstick tube. So the drain hose is out for me. I used to suck it up with a drill pump, but that was hateful. Now I just put a pan behind the hull drain and pull the plug. Yeah I have to clean the bilge afterwards. Again, it's the lesser of all evils so far.
I'm open for suggestions.

I got it about a year ago from Boaters world. I think it was about $50 or $60

Doubled up garbage bag with a bungee holding the bags around the engine works for me,,, just have to be careful removing the bag full of dirty oil :D

I originaly made a fancy drain stand with hose that led through the transom. I made it out of a paint tray.. I had a few problems with it and it didn't drain as well as I liked, so I eventually broke down and bought one of the pre-made drain hoses. Mine fits through the transom drain though.

i'll second or third the oil siphon pump pictured above. very clean to use. seems to get all the oil out. is slow to use, but worth the wait for no mess, no muss, no fuss..... been useing one for about 5 years now w/o issue....

yep, they remove all the oil. with the wand that goes down the dipstick tube. after it's empty. i can touch the bottom of the pan with the wand and hear the ting ting of no oil in the pan....

Mine was slow to use thru the dipstick tube also. The supplied plastic hose that fits has to be pretty small to go easily down the dipstick tube...., but when I use it thru the drain hose that connects to the hole in the bottom of the pan it sucks it out pretty fast even when cold. (much faster than I can change the filter!)

also, the tube is not so clean when you withdraw it out of the dipstick tube......you of course, have to use a rag etc to carefully wipe it off then you have to put it somewhere to drain or it drips all over the place when you're not looking....

I have used both and LOVE the bilge drain. Though the Tempo Oil Boy works really well too!

Can't help myself, just have to say this! Considering the price we pay for these boats, they should have a simple built in oil drain system. Are you factory guys listening?????????

I think all the new merc powered boats have simple transom drain hoses now.

Ummmmm,,, NO

It goes into my 5 gallon used oil jugs and then into the recycling bin at the parts store.

What would make you think someone would pitch 5 quarts of oil into the garbage:confused:

Mine does:D

I just fish it through, open it up to drain into pan and come back the next day to complete the oil change.

I use one of these, works well enough. It probably doesn't get it all out but close enough. I just used it to suck the auto trans fluid out of the pan of the 42 RE trans on my 98 Jeep (no drain plug). Sure beats taking a bath in trans fluid! Then you can remove the trans pan without spilling.
