How do you install a new fuel hose with bulb primer

I just purchased a new fuel hose including the bulb primer and I keep squeezing and the bulb never seems to get filled the way the old one did. Is there something you have to do to a brand new hose with just air in it? I know it's a dumb question, but I couldn't find an answer on the internet or other forums. The gas tank does have fuel in it, but I am pumping the fuel approximately 1.5 feet vertically upward. Thanks.

This may be a dumb question, but did you install it in the proper direction?

two things I can think of. you have an air leak before the bulb or its just defective. Can you put your old one back on with the new lines and see if it works.

I finally went back to the boat and with my fingers interlocked, just pumped the bulb quickly, it's almost like something caught and it went firm after that. Motor started and everything ran fine. I think the values may not work if there is just air in the line, once you get some gas in the bulb I think the values seem to open and close properly. By the way, the old hose had a splice in the middle of it. It just goes to show you, when you buy a used boat, don't assume that because the hose looks good at the engine side and at the tank side, that there isn't something bad inbetween ;).

Maybe your float needle was stuck open and you just kept loading it up? As you pump it the bowl should fill and float should rise to close the needle valve. If the needle valve never closed, you can just keep pumping away without the ball ever getting firm. Maybe it was stuck and freed up?

Those stupid bulbs are expensive aren't they? $15 for what that thing is ... oh well, just part of the current thousand.

New quality hoses are a good thing.
