How do you know if oil injection system is working correctly?

I have '98 Yamaha 115 2 stroke that I just bought and I've always pre-mixed my fuel. I'm thinking I will leave the oil injection system on the motor if everything is in good working order. I know that there is a low oil alarm but other than that, how do you know if it's working correctly?

Thanks for your help

There is no need for any type of flow sensor being the system is so dependable. Rare for the pump to fail as long as oil is in the tank.

Service manual should have a test and specs for the amount of oil that flows,
Need to premix some fuel and make sure it is getting to motor before disconnecting oil line and measuring CC output over a certain period of time.

Main thing is to make sure you drain water trap and keep clean oil in tanks. There is a small in line oil filter coming out of remote tank that needs attention from time to time

When you're doing a cold engine start, look for a smoke screen after the engine starts. That'll tell you the engine is getting oil.

The Yamaha oil injection system is completely mechanical, and it's very reliable.

If you ever have any problems, it's probably going to be with the pump system moving oil from the external oil tank into the small tank under the engine cowling.

Re: How do you know if oil injection system is working correctly?

Everything looks clean and to be in good shape. I'll replace that small inline filter that 99yam40 mentioned and drain and replace the oil in both tanks. Even the oil hose looks good. I would assume that since only oil is going through it, I don't have to worry so much about the type of deterioration that I might find in fuel lines, correct?

When I replace the oil in the tanks, do I need to do some type of prime of the system before startup?

Lastly, is the Yamalube the preferred oil or are there other oils that people have found to be better?

Thanks for your help!

Re: How do you know if oil injection system is working correctly?

I'm in the same situation. I recently purchased a 1980 Boston Whaler Revenge that came with a 1990 Yamaha 225 HP engine. It too has not been started in about 4+ years. I finished rebuilding the carbs last week and the next time I work on the boat I want to focus on the oiling system. I'm going to start by replacing the oil that is in the two tanks prior to attempting to start the engine, replace the inline oil filter, purge the tank to tank oil line and bleed the line that connects the engine oil tank to the mechanical oil pump.

My question pertains to the external tank's oil pump. When I did some compression testing a few weeks ago I noticed that when the ignition is on, the pump on the external tank will run. I did not leave the ignition on long enough to see if it would turn off automatically, nor did I examine the engine oil tank to see if it was being filled but the engine tank seems to be at the max level mark. Does the external tank's oil pump run as part of the normal ignition sequence and then turn off after 15+ seconds, etc. or do I likely have an electrical problem?

Thanks!

Re: How do you know if oil injection system is working correctly?

Can't answer that one but it would seem to me that it shouldn't be running unless it's pumping oil. I can check mine for you when I get to that point.

According to the owners manual, "if your motor hasn't been run for 12 months, you should run a 50:1 premix in addition to the oiling system. Watch for oil flowing through the oil feed pipes. After any air in the oil lines has been expelled, you should be able to run regular gas." Don't know how to look for air bubbles because all of the lines I've seen so far are black rubber.

Re: How do you know if oil injection system is working correctly?

Thanks for that piece of advice, BOAH. I was going to add some oil to the fuel for my hose testing but I'll go ahead and make it 50:1. This motor could probably use a little extra oil anyway.

Appreciate you checking your system as well. I have a feeling I'm going to need to get into the wiring. The engine gauges don't work either but they are probably just not hooked up. I have not dove that far into the abyss yet. :)
