Re: How do you know when its time to retire?

I knew it was time when guys my age and younger would go to bed feeling good and wake up dead........

Not to put a pall on things, but this helped me decide too. I had a friend at work who finally decided to retire and had decided on a date and was about to put in his paperwork. He went home for Memorial Day weekend and died of a heart attack. I vowed this would not be my story too.

30 years in the MS state retirement system....you will still get that 13th check every year. You'll be fine.

Retire, enjoy life and let those academic minded SOBs fight it.

Don't know why but I just feel like I'm jumping on the rocky side. Is that normal at this stage in life?

In deep water you have many sharks to contend with , Seems they were everywhere .
If your a good swimmer you will make it !!
The rocky side I took was my style ,, Around ,,over and on to the next challange- one foot at a time !!
After 20 plus odd years (almost 30) i have made a few misteps but all in all ,, It has been a Ball .

Just get out of there (work). If your worried about the money, then don't. I've been out 3+ years and it's great. Making a third of the income makes the planning a little different, but you can still buy whatever you need, just takes a little planning and saving. Just like you did when you were first married or had kids in college, we've all been there and now you have the temperament to hold off.

You find your priorities change but not your values.

Instead of paying a grand for a week in Florida with an ocean view, you get a month in Florida with a partial view for 1500. The beach is still there and now you have the time to really enjoy it rather than just look at it.
Better yet was a house for a month in the Dominican, or the month on the 4x4 Outer Banks, SC. (talk about being alone)

Working nights and mid-nights for so many years, getting more than 5 hours of sleep was always hard.
So the one thing I wanted to do was out-sleep the dog. Man did I try and do that. Lost everyday for a month but boy did I feel better. :D
Still take a day now and then for a rematch, still lose, but always feel better for the college try.

When to retire? NOW if you don't like it after a year, then go find a new job to supplement your income and keep you busy. No big problem there. If your like me, you'll wonder how you ever had time to work?

p.s. the honey-do list gets waaaaaaaaay longer.
