I'm in the market for a 9.8/9.9 hp ob. Looking seriously at the Tohatsu 9.8. I've read all the tech specs and looked at all the features for several motors. The Tohatsu seems to be the best value. What I'd like to know from all you Tohatsu owners is: how happy are you with them? Would you buy it again knowing what you now know? How highly would you recomend or dis them? Spec sheets and brochures can only go so far. I'd like to hear from actual owner/users. All comments welcome. Thanks.

Re: How do you like your Tohatsu?

Bob,

Not only do we sell these, I own one personally, and a number of my friends have them.

No question that it is the best bang for the buck, and the lightest weight in category. No "hokus-pokus" LU gearing, no O2 sensors, just simple, solid, and especially reliable. Maximum fuel consumption is about 1.0 GPH at WOT. They typically start on the first or second pull.

Like all modern 4-strokes, they prefer clean, pure fuel, and don't handle overfilled crankcase oil well. The harder you run them, the better they perform. With the wide variety of 3-blade props, and the availability of two 4-blade HT props, we spec the 9.8 for a lot of applications, from dinghies to sailboats. This is one motor that just plain does not have service issues. IMHO, the MFS8/9.8 is among the best carbureted Tohatsu designs currently on the market.

Re: How do you like your Tohatsu?

I picked a Nissan 18hp 4stoke back in 2008(the exact same motor as to tohatsu, just a different paint job) for my 16' lowe jon boat. This motor has been a great investment. Quiet and smooth from trolling for muskies to running wot to my next fishing spot. Hardest thing was following the first 10hrs breakin of the motor, but that's key to a good running motor. I'm totally happy with with my purchase that I'm looking at picking up the 9.8hp 4stroke to get access to some of the 10hp restricted lakes near by.
