Hey Sam....

Is it easier to get bait with a throw net, or with (don't know what they're called?) the leader with a string of small hooks to catch bait?

I'm sure it probably depends on the situation??

Just wondering.....

I'll jump in here on this one...the string of small hooks is called a sabiki rig. I will use them when I feel I may do much harm to my $180 Cracker cast net. If your net drifts down to the bottom and snags rocks, It's pretty much torn up. Also, you may be out in deep water where a cast net will not sink fast enough to net the bait. But drop that sabiki down there and you can load it up quickly. If you buy one, buy one with the special enclosed rod. You will not be picking them small sharp hooks out of your arm!! ;)

No problem...I lived in and fished that area for about ten years. I would welcome a trip back there. I know you have a few months to go...we'll stay in touch.

Rick...

Got you "highlighted" and on the top of my "friends" list.....lol.

We have the house on the market here (just signed the real estate agreement).
When we move depends on how fast the house sells - somewhat flexible as to when I'll retire.
Could be anywhere from August until the end of the year.

Whatever......can't wait!!!

Sabiki's are really a good answer from Rick, they are very user friendly, I use them in deeper water where the net sink is too slow or like Rick says I have concerns about tearing up a net, patching cast nets is almost as fun as shoveling snow I would guess. My advice would be buy the cheaper ones, $1.50 or so and throw them away after each use, they're just a hassle to save.

How would you use chum in a tidal river? Would the water take it away too fast for it to be effective or is there a trick to using it in a river?

Interesting question?? I guess you can use the frozen chum blocks, but the whole purpose is to attract and hold feeder fish to attract and hold the bigger fish. With a swift current you may not have much luck....I use that grinder when on the water. When I get home I grind up fish heads, guts, bait, and anything else and pack it into a big baggie and then a mold and freeze it. While thawing underwater it lets off pieces that attract the fish. That's the concept, and I could see problems with swift water..good luck! :)

That is what I think also, I tried once when anchored out at the beach in St Catherines sound and it just floated away out to the Atlantic. I could not see any way that it was doing any good like that and of course I did not draw any bait fish to the boat. Just thought I would ask and see if there was some trick to make it work in a river.

well you want some current, the idea being to create a large slick to cover a big area but I would be concerned that the slick would get dispersed in a strong current flow, good question though.

if they sell alot of it, smell it first, chum/bait that has gone bad will not attract fish. try to buy it where they get fresh stuff in weekly.
