How do you paint an outdrive?

How do you go about cleaning, sealing or otherwise establishing a barrier on an outdrive (or lower unit) to keep it from further pitting in salt water?<br /><br /><br />Tony

1. Sand any rough areas with 220 grit.<br /><br />2. Wash the entire drive with 50/50 solution of vinegar and water.<br /><br />3. Prime any bare areas with zinc chromate primer.<br /><br />4. Prime the entire unit with a suitable primer to your top coat.<br /><br />5. Paint.

I am doing mine tommorrow. Just5 as soon as I get it back. I am rebuilding one for my 6 cylinder and the lower unit had a section of the bottom fine ground down a few inchs so I have a friend welding on some additonal material. <br /><br />any how I got a sand blaster to strip the old paint and am going to repaint with enamel with a added hardner.
