Thought101 , If you are going to leave your truck like that, disable it. Unplug a part of the ignition to make it in-operable. (not the battery) Make it something simple to do, but not obvious to some theif.

Thought101, put in a master cut off switch to the truck that is hidden to everyone but you and then you don't have to worry about it.

You can wire it to the wire that runs the ignition with no problem.

The state where I live (NJ) has a car theft problem to begin with. My son in law walked into his parents detached garage, in one of the better towns, and there's a guy trying to hot wire his car. Even if you had a Glock or Colt or S&W, what are you going to do kill someone for stealing a car or boat that's worth 50K tops? A life isn't worth that and you'd be paying legal bills for the rest of your life if you weren't in jail... you just can't win anymore.

I'm from nj as well (there are 2 jersey jims much to my dismay =) ) ... you cant SHOOT a guy for stealing your stuff - but you can draw on him and hold him there till police arrive. If he charges you or comes at YOU with a weapon, it's self defense.

in most states it's life or limb gives you the right to use deadly force. I think in texas is the only state where it's life, limb or property.

Move...There are still parts of the country where theft is uncommon.

Ya I insure but mostly for the possable damage from fallen trees, and yes theft can and does occur here however not enoufgh to warrant the actions you guys take.

Here the door is seldom locked the coffee is always on and if you want my boat that bad you can have it, just dont even think about messing around while im here because for a verry brief moment you will wonder what that odd yet distinguisable whizzing sound overhead is and then it will don on you that this may not be the boat that you really wanted all that bad.

A decent length of HD CHAIN from Home Depot and a bigger padlock. Ran the chain over the frame and through one wheel spoke.
You figure the cops might stop the person with one wheel skidding, EH!?!

Mike.

IMO, a lock only keeps an honest person out, BUT a 9mm stops a thief in his tracks !!!! ;) (Provided you can catch him in the act) !!!!!

Lock it and Insure it.

Here is my lock ..... http://www.hidden-hitch.com/prod.asp?pc=378DAT They have them at BassPro for $21 or something like that. Strange ... it's not on the web site. But she is insured for full coverage!

But ... as much work as I have to do ... I dont know why I bought the lock.

I am looking the other way ... hint, hint hint!

Old trick on disabling your truck. Switch some of the plug wires. Especially easy if you have the older distributer cap. (Lots of newer cars don't have them).

That way they try to start the engine and it almost seems to catch but won't start.

Anyone ever think of using those tracking things that are like a magnet? I'm sure they make one that is water proof.... That would cover the trailer... Just thinking out loud.

Locks, behind locked fence, nosey neighbors, dog and gun.

At ramps, everything lockes. This way, the BG will steal someone elses who don't lock everything.

Here in Florida, they steal alumnminum trailers for the aluminum scrap when the prices go up. the ramps I use are patroled, however, most of the other trailers are bigger than mine, so they steal the biggest one. i have only heard about one trailer stolen at a ramp in the last 10 years here in Central Florida. It was one for a 29' boat, and there were 4 smaller trailers near it which were not touched.
However, its well insured.

I'm pretty fan south in Florida and just bought a new custom aluminum trailer. Trailer theft at the ramps is fairly common down here so I also bought the Kryptonite Fahgettaboudit chain and lock, which is Kryptonite's highest end bike chain.
