Always add the oil first.

If you need a visual reminder, write a note on the gas cap.

Don't ever deviate from the "oil first" procedure, not even "till I get home" or "till I buy more oil", or "I already started pumping gas, I'll do the oil when I am done".

Those 3 senarios will get you.

I like the idea of adding the oil first. I have a 9 gal tank . How do I know how much oil to add if I haven't filled it with gas and looked at the pump? thanks

if its a plastic above floor tank, it should have gal marks. just look at how much it will take in gas, then add that amount of oil, then put the amount of gas in that you added oil for. "myself" i dont worry about getting it too rich because my motor runs the same at 25:1 as it does 50:1. i dont mix it that rich! but if i'm going to miscalculate the oil, i'd rather it be richer than leaner.

missed shot--
I add only what I know will fit in the tank, either 3,6,9, or 12 gallons, adding the required 8 ounces for each 3 gallons. Then I mix up 5 gallons in a separate can. I add what i need to top off the built in tank, then the remainder becomes my "reserve", which I add to the tank when it will fit.
