Thanks for your help. I do have a very good grinder and just bought a dremel and neither of them are doing anything I am doing everything possible. what I think is the weld is so old (trailer is a 1972) That it has hardened so much that it is almost impossible to remove. I am trying to find a good welding shop near me but no luck so far. I live in Eatonton, GA so if anyone knows of a good welder around here please let me know.

In order of preference. Plasma cutters work great for stuff like this.


1) Plasma cutter or oxy torch
2) grinder with grinder disk
3) die grinder with cut off wheel
4) die grinder with tungsten tip
.
.
.
5) Dremel...not even an option...like spitting into the wind.

welds do not get harder with age....just so ya know...

I am betting you are using poor quality discs. Goto a fastener retailer or other commercial supplier. I've never seen a weld that couldn't be cut with a good metal cut off disc or grinding disc.

How about a couple of pictures? This sounds like an easy job with the right grinder and cutting/grinding discs, but who knows.

I've cut off more couplers than I care to think about in the past 5 years. Replaced one for a friend in my wife?s Equestrian club a couple of years ago it seems I?m the official coupler installer for the entire club.

I use a commercial, 5 HP, 7" Milwaukee grinder. Throw a good 7" ceramic aluminum oxide grinding wheel (Norton) on it and if I hussle, it takes 10 minutes or so to remove a coupler. Touch up the area with a good 100-120 grit soft disk on it afterward and you?d never know what happened.

Thanks for all of your help, I am going to take it to a welding shop and have them cut it because I don't want to damage it. I have very good quality grinder discs and It just wont cut off.

By the way the dremel didn't do anything but it is nice to have.

If it were me? I'd take it to a reputable welding shop and have it done. Cut it off with a plasma and reweld it with an arc or wirefeed. Quick and simple.

If you brought this in to my shop I'd charge you twenty bucks and be done in ten minutes with it.

I would either use a torch to cut the weld off or a grinder to remove it, depending on how it was mounted.

Taking it somewhere is the best advice on here!
