How do you remove the idle stabilizer unit?

I have read in this forum that it is a good idea to disconnect the idle stabilizer unit, with the reasoning that it often causes problems and that Mercury has stopped selling replacement units due to this reason. I am having some intermittent idle/acceleration problems and thought I would disconnect the the idle stabilizer unit to see if this helps, before I tear down my carbs for cleaning.

What is the correct way to disconnect the idle stabilizer unit from a 1996 150HP V6 motor? The wht/blk and red/wht wires go to to the switch box with a bullet connector in between. Can I just disconnect the two wires at the bullet connectors and then leave the unit mounted on the motor? The third wire from the idle stabilizer goes to ground so I figure I can leave that one alone.

Thanks for any information/advice/warnings on doing this.

Has anyone removed their idle stabilizer units and if so, how did you do it?
