how do you remove the waterpump off the driveshaft on a 1988 force 50hp

[88 Bayliner Force 50]

There is a brass ring around the top of the driveshaft that i do not know how to take off to remove the water pump to replace the impellar. Do i need a puller to remove it and if so will it drop back in place to reinstall it. what is it there for?

It is a retainer ring.<br />It is there to hold the rubber boot in place.<br />The rubber boot covers the driveshaft/powerhead connection to prevent corrosion.<br />It should slide off.<br /><br />If you don't have the rubber boot anymore, you can probably do away with the retaining ring.

I just pulled my shaft out of the gear case and replaced the water pump and then reinstalled it back in the gear case. I am not sure if this is correct, but it worked for me? I replaced the shaft seal while I had it apart! Let some of the other guys comment on this before you do it but that is how my local dealer told me to do it.

the ring should be installed with the counter bore facing up, and the boot should fit inside, with the lip/degreed part of the rubber boot on the top side (not in the counter bore of the ring, rather facing up as to go into the powerhead)....correct roscoe?
