There is a brass ring around the top of the driveshaft that i do not know how to take off to remove the water pump to replace the impellar. Do i need a puller to remove it and if so will it drop back in place to reinstall it. what is it there for?

It is a retainer ring.
It is there to hold the rubber boot in place.
The rubber boot covers the driveshaft/powerhead connection to prevent corrosion.
It should slide off.

If you don't have the rubber boot anymore, you can probably do away with the retaining ring.

I just pulled my shaft out of the gear case and replaced the water pump and then reinstalled it back in the gear case. I am not sure if this is correct, but it worked for me? I replaced the shaft seal while I had it apart! Let some of the other guys comment on this before you do it but that is how my local dealer told me to do it. :p

the ring should be installed with the counter bore facing up, and the boot should fit inside, with the lip/degreed part of the rubber boot on the top side (not in the counter bore of the ring, rather facing up as to go into the powerhead)....correct roscoe?
