According to my research, I have a 1990 oil injected 115 hp Tower of Power. I got to this conclusion by using the serial # 0C247555, that is on the engine, and looking at the chart(s) at websites http://www.autorepairmanuals.biz/site/573683/page/599300 and http://www.maxrules.com/merc_contents.html. According to the 2nd site, my engine is either an ELPTO (Electric start, Long shaft, Power Trim, Oil injected) OR an EXLPTO same as ELPTO, but with and eXtra Long shaft....right?
Oil injected?? Shouldn't there be a reservoir for the oil somewhere? Oil injected means the oil is separate from the gas, correct? I mix mine, cause the guy I bought the boat from (who lied to me about the year, he said 96), mixed his oil and gas. If in fact this is an oil injected engine, and I shouldn't be mixing the oil and gas, are there negative effects of mixing as opposed to injecting?
My mechanic just got back from overseas, so let the work begin! Shouldn't be much.....carb cleaning and rebuild, checking hoses, tune up, trying to get the prop off the lower unit shaft and worked on, replacing fluids.

Re: How do YOU spell frustration????

In the early days of oil-injection, there were people who felt, rightly or wrongly, that the systems could be troublesome.

So; some of those people chose to dis-able the oil injection and go back to the "old method" of mixing the oil in the gas.

As oil injection systems became more sophisticated and reliable, fewer people choose to do this.

Oil injection (at least the newer versions) meters the oil much more accurately than a straight 50:1 mix. Much less oil at idle for example.

How many cyl's, how many carb's?

Tower of power was the stacked 6 with three carbs.

Later model 115''s (like mine) are only 4 cyl with 4 carbs.

I've heard of a lot of people mixing their gas/oil instead of using the oiler. I don't see where you could get hurt.

Your engine is a 1990 MERCURY 115 ELPTO, Model number 1115412JD

Back on 09/24/1992 There was a warranty claim filed for a failed: OIL ALARM /OPEN/SHORT on this engine.

To fix it they used part number (14857 1) OIL WARNING MOD.

My guess would be something went out again so they got  and removed the oil system.

This engine has been through a few owners over the years, So there is a chance the guy did not lie to you, He just may not have known the history of the engine is all.;)

Here is a link to the oil system, Had it been on the engine still.;)

SERVICE MANUALS

Here's the service manual part number from mercury marine for your engine.
(90-136452)

Here are the engines this service manual covers, 70/75/80/90 3 CYL (1987 - 1993) and 100/115 4 CYL (1988 - 1993).

Re: How do YOU spell frustration????

Thnx for the timely responses. Boat Tech....I don't know what crystal ball or spy agency you used to get and pass along that info on my motor, but it's very interesting. My next question was gonna be where and how do I get a service manual and/or parts, but you answered it for me before I could ask and saved me 5 minutes of typing (hunter and pecker here), thnx again. Had some aggravating issues the first (and only) time I took the boat out, but I think we have a handle on what they are. With your information and the service manuals in hand, it will be running like a clock soon. IF it doesn't cost me my first born. I'm sure I'll be back with pointers and questions periodically. Thnx again!
