How do you stop the oiling system?

Many folk on this forum have advised me to rather premix the fuel and to stop using the oiling system on my 1998 Johnson 35HP.

How do I disable it without removing it physically from the outboard..is it possible?

The other side of the coin is, the oiling system has never given problems before, should one rather "let sleeping dogs lie"?

The VRO system is very reliable as long as you pay attention to it.

This is confusing me, does the model BJ35ARLECR have a VRO system?

VRO stands for Variable Oil Ratio.

Thanks for the info, why I am confused is I owned a 60hp Johnson that was labled VRO.I did not know that the smaller hp engines had a VRO oiling system.The oil pump looks rather like a flattish round object, rather than the typical VRO oil pump shape.

One is never to old to learn...:)

You have an oil injection system that's the new and improved VRO. The original VRO came out in the early-mid eighties. Some boaters still don't trust them but for the most part, I think it's been a great system and has probably saved more motors than it has ruined. Most motors are ruined by operator error and poor maintenance.

Isnt OMS ( oil metering system) the improved version of VRO?

The engine in question has an oil mixing pump but surely that's not a VRO or OMS

Thats what I thought.It makes sense that it is a much simpler oil mixing system.How reliable, is the question to ask.

If you are going to remove..... plug the inlet at the motor and junk or fleabay the rest back to oil tank

Vic, the first ~ 1985 was VRO, followed several years later by VRO2, an improved flavor. OMS was introduced (early 90's ?) as a replacement for VRO and was not the same. VRO actually varied the rate of oiling depending on power setting, while OMS oiled continuously at a fixed 50:1 ratio.

VRO = Variable Ratio Oiling
OMS = Oil Mixing System

Re: How do you stop the oiling system?

Thanks

I based what I said on the item on the FAQs board where it says

"Since 1993, the VRO is actually called an oil metering system (OMS). Theratio averages about 60:1, slightly leaner at idle and slightly richer atfull throttle. The older pumps idled between 150:1 ( prior to 1990) and100:1 ('90-'92 ) then richened up to 50:1 as the engine load increased"

I assumed therefore that an OMS was just the latest improvement to the VRO system... with a name change to get away from the stigma attached to VRO

But not so ?? VRO2 soldiered on but OMS was used on smaller engines like the one in question ?

Re: How do you stop the oiling system?

No, at some point VRO2 was replaced across the line by OMS. BTW, I had an '85 140, which came with VRO, which was replaced under warranty with VRO2 about 1 1/2 years after I bought the motor. I sold that motor five years ago and never had a single issue with either oiling system. Must have had over 1000 hours on that one.

You lose the alarm system if you disconnect for no reason.
If you develop an air leak in the fuel system the vro will inject extra oil to protect the cylinder that is lean.
Its a good thing and most experts like it.
The down side is the cost of replacement, but boaters are all rich.:D
