yes i believe the shifter rod is holding you back....not to familaur with your engine...but if it has water intakes on the lower end remove them..the shifter rod connection may be in there....it is on my motor so taking a shot that yours are also...but you need to release the shifter rod to drop it....

Most manual shift Johnnyrudes need to have the shift rod disconnected. There are different ways to do this, depending on the year of the motor. You might post the year.

On V4 VRO models, shift gearcase to reverse position, pull the retaining pin (nice big loop at the end for your finger) from the shift lever, push the shift lever toward the powerhead. (This is from the service manual, without the big loop comment).

Shift shaft is released.

Disconnect remote cables first for access. May need to as well to let the shift lever move in. Haven't done it yet on my 90hp, but have on a 60 VRO. The service manual shows all cables removed.

Not all 4 cylinder VRO models are like that one. See my link in the earlier post. 140hp 1985 originally VRO looper.

Darn design changes eh?

That's why these forums are a great help to folks. I'm glad my 87 90hp has the pin. Makes the job a lot easier. Need to do a water pump replace this summer myself.

kenmyfam, your posts are good stuff. I just wanted to point out the easier way for those that have that design. It's a topic that comes up a lot it seems.

No problem. The more information shared here the better. I just wanted to make sure that someone with my version was looking for what is in your version and adding confusion to their job.
Good luck with yours.:)

If the manual is for mechanical shift, it should be real close. Aftermarket Gearcases may be avail for that motor. Check out SEI Website. It hardly pays to repair the gearcases, as the gears and bearings are pricey. Used gearcases are another way to go.
