My girl brought home a shark today and when I gutted it, it had eggs and babies inside. She got all sad...so I told her I'd ask. I am now asking. Any tips etc...

I had the same thing happen to me. Other than the belly being rather swollen looking i'm not sure you couldnt otherwise tell without some kind of test. Normally I don't keep sharks. I've eaten a few specices though, so I can understand people who do like to keep them for food.

Shark tastes good. I do not think all but a Marine Biologist can tell if a shark is pregnant. Sharks are one on the few species of fish that hatch their eggs in inside the cavity of their bodies. I would think that the likely hood of a female shark having a little one inside, would be pretty high.

I know this sounds strange, but if you see that the shark has fresh scar tissue towards the tail,then it is proof that this shark has recently mated.
Male sharks will bite females during the mating period.This holds true mostly for open water shark,but much less for ground shark such as dog fish.
Back in the good ole days we were one of the few charter boats to catch a Mako offshore of Stuart Fl. trolling dead bait. In this case a horse bally on a wire line. Well the customers wanted the jaws and we took the meat they offered. It's the only shark I've eaten but man did it melt in your mouth. Not on a par with cobia but pretty close, course I don't even know if they are legal to catch anymore. Oh yeah, it was around 180 lbs and its much better to eat a shark than let them eat you.
Believe it or not, they are overfished. Longlines decimate them. Alos, there is an absolutely rotten practice of "finning" the carcass and dumping the rest over the side.
We catch bunches of them around here this time of the year, and throw back all but one or two smaller ones. If gutted soon after caught and then brought home...soak them in milk for an hour or so and grill them.
Some fish houses use a punch and cut out circular pieces of meat that is sold as "sea scallops"....
