How do you tell if your anchor is set?

I use open CPN as my nav software. It has a drift alarm for anchoring. You set a limit in feet from a position and if you drift out of that range it sounds an annoying alarm to tell you as much. This is my preferred way of knowing if my anchorage has allowed drift. It can be set to take into consideration tide swings .. just depends on where you set the alarm range.

Also alot of the GPS mapping systems have an anchor alarm that will alert if you drift beyond the range you set.

once you get a few anchorings under your belt in differant conditions you will get a good idea advice is good but doing it with your boat is really best way one thing i do is always take a good look at a tree or other landmark on shore and make sure after a time i am still lined up with it or move closer or farther
