How do you tighten up the flywheel ??? What torque?

Another stupid question. I'm wrapping up the rebuild of a 1969 25hp Evinrude ... and everyone says that I must torque the flywheel back on to some exact force, but I can't find the spec for this anywhere. I have the original 1969 shop manual and it isn't mentioned.

Also, how do you keep the flywheel from spinning while putting the wrench to it. Putting a 2x4 at the prop just doesn't seem right. I don't won't to break anything. I don't have to buy another special tool do I?

Thanks again,

The best way is to use a flywheel turner (avail from NAPA stores) or make a large strap wrench. The torque value should be in your shop manual ... I've never seen an OEM manual that didn't have the torque values for all fasteners requiring torquing.

40-45ft.lbs is the proper torque. I leave the back bolt from the recoil starter on (Sticking up) and jam a piece of 1x2 between the bolt and the flywheel sprocket to hold it still. Works on bigger motors than a 25hp so it should work fine.

Home made strap wrench. Piece of 2x2 lumber and a nylon web strap. Or an old belt that you don't need any more to hold your pants up.
Cost, next to nothing.

Air impact gun works well. No need to hold the flywheel. Maybe a little unscientific but I have never had a problem or damage. I am sure I will get some nay sayers.

if it's electric start I use a big screwdriver in the teeth of the flywheel and lock it somewhere. For not toothed flywheels, I use an old fan (V) belt and wrap it around in the groove for emergency starting and that gets a great grip on it. But you usually need 2 folks to do it thataway. 1 to hold, 1 to tighten.
