Re: how do you use ebay?

I've been a Silver PowerSeller on eBay for about 2 years. This month I think I am being promoted to Gold.

rogerwa - you have it right. You have to look at the total price. Item + shipping.

Some people use inflated shipping as a way to beat eBay out of some of the final value fee. Here is what eBay charges for items that sell (n/a for autos and RE)

Closing Value Final Value Fee
$0 - $25 5.25% of the closing value
$25 - $1,000 5.25% of the initial $25 ($1.31),
plus 2.75% of the remaining closing value balance.
Over $1,000 5.25% of the initial $25 ($1.31),
plus 2.75% of the initial $25-$1000 ($26.81),
plus 1.50% of the remaining closing value balance.

You can find eBay's fee schedule here:
http://pages.ebay.com/help/sellerguide/selling-fees.html

On top of that you add 3% fee for paypal and all of a sudden selling fees are not trivial when you are running it as a business. When you include the cost of no sales (listed but not purchased) plus deadbeats (maybe 1% - 5% of all sales) and I figure the cost of selling on eBay is around 10% of revenue over the long term.

Anybody trying to inflate shipping w/o fixed shipping disclosed in the auction is not going to last long on eBay. As long as they are up front about it they are usually ok and get what other sellers are getting for similar items (when you add bid + shipping)

I usually ship priority mail and charge actual cost - actual cost includes the cost of labels, ink, packing material, etc. I only use fixed price shipping and disclose it and the method clearly in the auction.

Ralph what do you sell and whats you name on e-bay. I have a few bids in right now. I'm strictly a buyer. Bought all my step daughters college books on e-bay saved about $200 and most of them were new and/or instructors editions.

Not trying to be a smart-a$$ but I sell whatever I can get that I think will sell on eBay. I was focusing on sporting goods intitally and did really well selling them. I now do some specialty apparel and specialty jewelry. I also just picked up some marine gear.

I buy mostly closeouts, liquidations, bankruptcies, etc. and then sell them on eBay - sometimes I win and sometimes I lose. Kinda like playing the market, the winners have to more than cover the losers. You have to be willing to take some financial risk - layout some real money based on experience and judgement.

Since I sell some Marine hardware it would not be appropriate for me to disclose my ID - besides I don;t like to mix business with pleasure

A good 50% of all the material to rebuild my Formula came off eBay - I saved tens of thousands easily.

10-4 good buddy. I didn't realize you could make it a business. I'm currently bidding on some tents, we'll see.

I've heard of both and check them from time to time but have yet to find anything I would pursue.

Hmm. I also like to keep an eye on the import/export news groups. I used to have a little international trade brokerage. Never did much with it though, high risk, even with air tight L/c performance of bond verbage. The Russians are notorious for non pay

But I bet there a lots of opportunity in unclaimed import freight.... Problem is you probably have to buy whole containers.

Yeah, and assume that whats on the b.o.l. is really whats in there. Stuff gets demerged for all kinds of reasons, and I'd to end up with a container of perishables that labelled non perishables
