I am very new to outboard engines. I was wondering how the battery gets charged from the engine and if there are parts that need to be replaced.

Re: how does the battery get charged

Your engine charges the battery via a rectifier mounted on the side of the power head.If you lift off the cowling and look at the right hand side of the motor from the stern you should see a black buzz bar with wiring attached to it.Below this buzz bar is where the rectifier should be mounted. It is quite a large unit and should have three yellow wires from the alternator going in to it and one red wire exiting it that goes to the battery.

Before you replace any parts get the rectifier tested and make sure and test the wiring with a multimeter as the wiring can breakdown inside the plastic sheathing over the passage of time.

Also make sure that all the electrical connections are sound and not rotted with age..

Re: how does the battery get charged

The charging device, the stator is up under the flywheel. It's excited by permanent magnets glued to the flywheel. AC comes out of it, which is rectified into 12 volt DC by the rectifier Lubosleftboot identified.

It's rarely troublesome, but does go bad sometimes. Usually something causes it, like a battery attached backward, running without the battery connected, or loose battery connections. This usually kills the rectifier first though.

The stator also supplies power to the ignition system, but via a separate set of coils.

To test if the charging system is working properly, check the voltage at the battery before and after you start the engine. It should go up when running, though you may have to rev it up some. Do that in gear; it's not a good idea to rev 2-strokes unloaded.

A dead tach sometimes indicates charging system problems, because it takes it's signal from the stator's charge coils.

yeah i dont have a tach.
so I guess the best thing to do is to use a multimeter at the battery.
Can that be done on the trailer with muffs?

Yes, but don't rev it above about 1500. I guess you'll have to do that by ear. ;)

By far the biggest problem with blown charging systems comes from using wing nuts on the battery. If you've got them, tighten them with pliers or replace them with nuts.

The things you can learn just randomly reading the repair forum! Glad you asked that, drew. Note to self: get a pair of pliers to be kept in the battery compartment. Once again, thanks, Paul!
