Re: How does the fuel gauge work?

Silvertip,I hope you dont mind me using your'e diagram.
I had two fuel tanks sensors not working on my 1985 winner mariner bass boat.
Today after reading this thread last night,I tore into it.
Had ten volts on the sensors side on both tanks.
Took the hot side off ,touched the wire to ground and it peged the guage to full on both tanks,So I knew there was no problem with the guage.
Took the whole sensor assembly out (you may have to twist and work the senor out carefully),I had to do this and after disassemby ,discoverd that when moveing the foat, while looking inside, saw that there was no contact, took that apart adjusted the length to make contact,by strech the spring, just a little and moveing the part toward the coil of wire ,or arch windings. It had a set screw for adjusting ,but it was a wierd type, like a small philipshead, but a little different.I was able to force it just a little closer,Thats all That needed to be done there. I did this on both tanks..Works Great!
There was one other problem with one of the senders.
I noticed that the round part were your'e hot wire mounts was not making good contact with the rest of the unit,it was not alowing total ground ,cleaned with light git sanpaperand put the two pieces back together, took about two or three hours.
If you take your'e time and look how the thing is assembled ,or take some pics before you tear it down, its not bad at all. Turn the voltage off before you make an attempt at it.
So for someone who is up to it ,this is a good fix to save some money on this type sender unit.
These forms are a big help, thanks to all who contribute!
