How does the Oil Pump on Yamaha 150 work?

I just replaced the powerhead on my 1996 Saltwater Series II 150 due to water being in my oil injection system. The cap was left off the reservoir, as well as my speedo line came off, shooting water all under my console, which got into the oil tank. About 1/3 of the oil tank was filled with water, so my oil pump was injecting salt water into the engine rather than oil.

When I took the old pump off, some water came out of it, but I was wondering how the pump actually worked because if I turn the arm of the pump to the right, it will go in, and then stop. If I turn it to the left, it comes all the way out of the pump. Does it turn back and forth? Any help would be great. Thanks guys!

junk that pump, clean the oil lines and replace all the inline check valves.
its a wobble type positive displacement pump the output volume is determined by rotational speed and arm position.
