How does the Xantrex PRO Inverter 1800 transfer switch work?

I just baught a Xantrex PRO Inverter 1800 with internal transfer switch. It says it detects when the external power source is present. Does this need to re-route the shore power through the inverter? Or can I just wire the inverter directly to the pannel where the shore power is connected?
