After reading for hours on this forum I would like to collect some data from YOU! What performance does your Johnson - Evinrude 88 SPL or 90hp outboard provide for YOU! Specifically the v4 cross flow OMC models. Please include the fallowing.

1.Boat size/weight
2.Hull design (flat/V)
3.Propeller size, make/model and material
4. RPM @ WOT
5. Any general notes. Hole shot/top speed.

Thanks everyone who helps with this, I am sure this info all in one place will be very useful.

I've had half a dozen or so.

They are HORSES. Super strong for their HP rating. Gobs of torque.

Just about bulletproof if given reasonable care.

A bit on the thirsty side if you are heavy on the throttle. About 6 gal. per hour at high speeds.

The last one I owned was on a 16' Sea Nymph and did about 47 MPH.

See link below.

Re: How does YOUR 88 SPL Johnson 90 Perform?

I've got a 1984 90J on my 18-foot Starcraft American (V-hull, Fiberglass). I've got it propped to spin out at about 5800 RPM, running a 15-inch Michigan aluminum prop. Not bad on gas if I'm easy on the throttle, but it'll suck it down quick if I'm horsing it... It's very good out of the hole, even with a boatload of people. Haven't GPSed it, but seat-of-the-pants I would guess upper 30s, maybe 40.

1987 90 on a 17 Bostaon Whaler Montauk, 43 MPH @ 5600 rpm. Don't know about the prop.

1996 Johnson 88 hp on a 22 foot square-stern dory with 8 foot beam, flat bottom. Loaded weight of boat is 2600#, top speed 31 knots.

Day in and day out, I get 2.8 nautical miles per gallon on the open ocean including a mix of running, trolling, idling, etc. Normal cruise speed is 12 to 18 knots.

No tach so I can't help you with rpms.

Got 1983 90HP seahorse,17p Alum. prop, mounted on 1983 Hydra-Sport X-260. 16' fiberglass pad bottom bass boat. 5600 rpm 44.1 MPH last year, moved motor up have not retested, maybe 1 or 2 mph more. I think total weight is 1200/1400 lbs ready to fish. Not sure about fuel use, just run it till "E" add more!! Had for 2.5 yrs very smooth, dependable, marine sta-bil every fill up.

Re: How does YOUR 88 SPL Johnson 90 Perform?

I have a '98 Johnson 115spl with premix....so I guess I qualify for this thread.

Boat size/weight- '98 Aquasport Osprey (CC) 17.5, weighs 1850 dry w/motor
Hull design is a V, center console
Propeller size is currently a 14" with a 17 pitch, aluminum
RPM @ WOT is 5500
General notes- speed at WOT is 42, and out of the hole is around 4 seconds.

Workhorse engine- although it is thirsty, with a full load it cruises trimmed out nicely around 3/4 throttle- @3800-4000 rpm.

I have a 1989 88SPL that is ROCK SOLID!!! I have it on a 19' Bluefin Sportsman V-bottom I got from my dad. Running an aluminum 13-3/4 x 15 prop, RPM @ WOT runs around 4,800 but I don't push it hard. Speed at that rpm is right at 35-38 mph and that's planty for what I need. No longer a bass tourney player so I don't need my 75 mph bass rig. Just an old fisherman that likes to be on the water still. :) This Johnson Outboard is a true performer! I pull the kids on their tubes and toys without any problems when they want to go out and play on the water. I do wish I had a 4 stroke as they are restricting some waters I like to fish to 4 bangers out west here but I'm really happy with what I've got!
