I've replaced impellers on Mercury's before, this is my first attempt at replacing an impeller on a 140HP 1979 SeaHorse, how easy or hard is it, anything in particular I need to know. Thanks

the worst part is disconnecting and reconnecting the shift linkage under the carb. the rest is simple.

Not any more difficult, but different. A shop manual or detailed instructions from a BRP pump kit will be helpful.

A 1/4 inch drive swivel adapter and an extension for the ratchet helps a bunch. Wrap a little electrical tape around the swivel so it does not bend real easy. Back the bolt out just enough to let the shift rod free without completely removing the bolt..;)
I think putting it in reverse moves the bolt in a better position..

I'm at work right now, so I don't have the Seloc Manual with me or the pump kit diagram, I have the carbs off for a rebuilt, should I just wait on installing them and go ahead and replace the impeller? It sounds like that's what I need to do. It might make it easier.

I'm doing the same thing right now and if your carbs are off it makes it 100 times easier to get the shift linkage off. I would do it now! Everything has been easy so far the problem I'm having is getting the impeller to actually come off the shaft it seems to be stuck and I can't get it to break free! I did another one on a 135 and it came off like it was buttered up. This one is stuck and I'm not sure about trying to pry it loose with a flat head or something!

I did my 70 HP last night. The impellor was also stuck. I sprayed a little PB blast at the pig and it loosened right up.

I don't know the size of the impeller of your motor but if it the big one like on my 87.The cup is not easy to place over the impeller.I used two zip strips to hold the tails in the CORRECT direction.slipped the cup half way down and cut the zip strips with a pair of wire cutters while holding the cover. Then push it the rest of the way down and tighten er up..

I had to chisel the impeller off of my '97 115, chiseled right through the rubber and then the brass insert inside of it that slides down the driveshaft, being careful not to hit anything else, once I bent the insert a little with the chisel, it came loose and up the shaft...PB Blaster definitely helps too.

I never try to fit the cup onto the impeller separately while it's on the shaft, I twist the impeller into the cup first and then slide the whole thing, with the housing onto the shaft as an assembly. Just remember that if you do it this way, you are looking at it upside down, so you have to twist the impeller in the correct direction. Slide the whole thing down and hold the key in place with a popsickle stick, work it onto the key and it will drop right on, pull the stick out slowly and it will go the rest of the way down, then just bolt it down, have done it that way 5 times in the last 2 years on various engines, way easier than trying to spin the driveshaft to get the impeller to seat in the cup.

I like the zip tie idea too though.

But either way, getting that LU down is gonna be easier with the carbs off.

The OMC factory manual states to put the impeller on the shaft. Then when its time to put the housing over it just turn the drive shaft clockwise, cover pops right on and impeller is bent in the right direction.
I always take a little grease and coat the inside of the housing to avoid any binding on the first start up.
