Re: how far can i go out?
thanks for the info, great responses! definately will get to know the boat in the bay, lakes before i attempt the open waters...
i spend about 25 hrs a week on boats, ( marine contractor) and hear lots of story's,mostly bad when it comes to novices offshore, 3 major points to consider when going offshore:
1) -fuel 1/3 rule 1/3 going - 1/3 returning and 1/3 reserve - know your boats consumption under all weather scenarios.
2) - weather - NOAA offshore forecast along with having some marginal meteorological knowledge
3) - your vessel - battery's - motor-bilge pump - safety gear (ditch bag) back up systems/vhf-epirb - life vests - flares - ect.......
Keep in mind most offshore boats are built to handle heavy weather, bowriders aren't, too much water & you sink. storms can pop up in a heartbeat, know how to handle rough seas without capsizing.Buy Chapmans read it.and yes given great conditions, you can take your boat offshore, but take it very seriously, things can go wrong quick.
