Re: How far do I go with floor repair on my 98 baliner?

The stinger has been repaired. I found that the hole in the stinger was not rot. It was mortised for the bulked to pass through it. It was solid but completely black. I cut out about 6" off the stinger and about 20" of the cap so the joints were staggered. The inner stringer was clean so I replaced the wood and wrapped the stringers and cap with two layers of 1708. Its a little had to make out because of the putty but I attached a picture from before I sanded and fiberglassed. I need to remember to fill with foam....

I have cut the wood for the deck and am getting ready to install. Should I cut the ski locker first or after I glass the floor?

Same question for the back seat. It runs the width of the boat. Should I glass the floor while it is out or install the seat and glass over it? It is flat all the way to the engine compartment without it. I planned to do it after but the floor wont be flat after I tab in the seat base.

Question 3
Is there a rule of thumb for how many screw to use to hold the deck down?

I getting close to glassing the deck. I have been reading up but have a few more questions in addition to the ones above
1 I think I decided to cut the ski locker first
2 do I glass the floor flat and then tab in the seat structures?
3 Does the deck get held down with any adhesive or resin?
4 Other than the tabbing do I use 2 or three layers of fiberglass on the deck? I have read a few different posts.

One more question
5. I read post that references 2lb and 4lb flotation foam. Is there two different types? How do I know what to use?

I like deck screws on 8" centers (apart).

How are you planning to install the floatation foam? Are you going to put it in before you install the decking or after?

There are several densities of floatation foam, you should be fine with the 2 lb. density.

If you're going to install the foam after you install the deck, do it before you glass the deck in.

When you glass the deck, do the tabbing first around the perimeter of the deck and then glass the deck in.

This shows what to use on your deck:

I do plan on installing the deck before the foam.

I am a little paranoid about the connection between the new floor and the hull and to the stringers. I am afraid that any movement in the floor from walking or driving through waves will cause the connection to of the floor to the to crack. Were the floor ties into the hull it is basically flat.

It's been done countless time but I am used to work on metal projects where it would be welded, bolted, riveted, etc.

Okay...
The deck is on, the foam is in, the tabbing is done and the deck is glassed. It's been a long couple of days.

Tomorrow, I would like to get the the seat boxes on.
The driver and passenger seat sit on boxes. I cut the wood but need to assemble them. I am planning to glass over them. They are 14x14x4 but I am not sure I will be able to wrap it that tight. Any suggestions?

Do I putty and tab them or can I use the 5200? I would like to get a clean 90 degree angle so the carpet looks right.

Nah...You didn't do ANY work on the boat. I can't see anything!!!!:D
I'd PB and CSM some 2x4 blocks to the deck for the inside measurements of the boxes. Then slip the boxes over the blocks and screw the sides into the blocks. Hope that makes sense.

Pictures tomorrow! I have back issues. Two days of working on the floor with 4 hours of picking up leaves did me in.

That makes perfect sense. I raised the seats 2" so it be nice to have the extra support.

I am going to start planning out the carpet install. How hard is it?
I am thinking of cutting the carpet before the seat boxes go in.

Okay, here are the floor pics. One before fiberglass and one after.

I rough fit the carpet tonight but I still have to glass in the seat bases.
Any tips on the install?

Can I spread the glue in stages or does it need to be done all at once?
I thought I could do it it in three stages but I was afraid it may leave a wrinkle.

Sorry about the back. After a week of flooring my house I feel for you. Glad you decided to save another Baylinner. I have always liked the looks of them. Mine is an old 88 and I had to do floor and transom to make he float. I did not put foam back in but boat on a lake that I can always see the shore line. I was told it was structural but have had mine wet for 4 to 5 years with no problems. Can wait to see some more update pics.
