I have posted a couple of threads about this 1974 Johnson 6hp and I have a question that maybe somebody can answer. I have ordered new fuel pump, carb kit, points, condenser, spark plugs, gear oil, impeller and will put it togeather next week. I have a light weight...maybe 80lbs, 14' narrow, shallow alumminum boat. I was just wondering about what to expect in performance from the 6. Like will it plane off? About how fast will it go? How well can it handle current in a river??? etc etc etc... I have seen a few 9.9's and 9.5's and 9.8's runnng around a lake pretty fast and no problem planing and their 14'-16' aluminum boats are much heavier than mine. I know this is no performance motor but have been told that it would do much better than I expect...Because I really dont expect much at all.. And I'm use to running the river in my 17' Bumblebee with a 140 Evinrude..... Thanks, Fishermanms

I have a 9.9 on a 14' alum. It runs flat out at 12 mph according to my GPS. I can't see 15 out of a 6 and planning is out of the question I think. As a matter of fact I have a 6hp johnson I used on this same boat, seems like it took half a day to cross the creek.

Well, 12mph for 9.9 horses aint much at all. Most everybody I talked to runs 15-20 and 21 was tops. Are you sure you dont have an IRON boat??? Course I know its got to be set-up right for best performance and the prop pitch and size has something to do with it.... Do you have one on there??? LOL.. Just messing with you.. I will be sure and take an extra tank and plenty of food when I cross tha Mississippi... Fishermanms

I have a 1999 6hp that would plane my 80 # 12" Jon,weight had to be right as said above.son would start in middle seat, and move to front to finish planing it off.I`d say 12-15 mph.I later converted it to 8hp,made very little differance.

Whats the max rating on your boat? A 1950's 7.5 hp Evinrude would plane my narrow 12' aluminium boat (rated for 6 hp) and speed me along between 15-20 mph. The same motor on my wide 12' boat (rated for 12.5 hp) won't even get me on plane by myself.

I suspect a 6 hp on any 14' tin boat will have planing issues. Let us know your results.

My boat is oldddd. I've had it for bout 30 years and it was old when I got it. It dont have no plate or nothing except when I just painted it and cleaned off the last four or five paint jobs, there was a decal on the back side that had apicture of a rooster and the name United. It was on both sides. Thats all I know about it. I will let yall know how it performs... Fishermanms
