How fast can I expect to go?

I am looking at buying a 1976 Stingray Banshee with a 90 hp Chrysler on it, or a 1979 18foot sea ray closed bow with an inboard 175 hp. What kind of rough speeds can I expect? I know props and all that will make a difference, but I am just curious as to what to go with as I can get both for near the same $

it depends on what you are gona use it for. for skiing, tubing and wakeboarding, speed isn't even an issue, its pulling power you need. both those boats should do at least 30. for real speed you need somthing with alot more hp than that

Just forget about the first boat ;)

And exactly what motor and drive is making the Searay move

I haven't figured that out yet. In General would a boat with 175 hp out do a boat with 90 hp if they were fairly common.

Thanks for that. I have a 90 hp merc right now and I am dying for more speed. Just thought that maybe a lighter speed boat style would be faster with the same hp, although I was sure that the inboard with 175 hp would out do it.

Slow steps till I get to 454 jet drive ;)

the Chylser is not longer supported with parts, the merc is too small for the boat. i/o you need atleast a 4.3L v-6. ob 115hp up, stay with the major brands.

I have a 72 SRV 180 (16.5 ft searay) with a 120 hp Mercruiser. With a 19 pitch prop it has a lousy hole shot, but will do about 34 mph on glassy water. The 175 in yours should top out over 40 easily. More is you trim it out. We had a 76 18ft Mark Twain with the 188 that would do 60 trimmed out.

Re: How fast can I expect to go?

I would guess that the I/O would top out at no more than 38-40MPH. Most standard boat/IO packages are designed to reach top out oat these resonably safe speeds. You might get a wee bit more speed out of the outboard, but I doub't it will outperform your Merc 90HP on the same hull.

Power needs go up exponentially in relation to speed increases. That it if you double your power, you will increase your top speed somewhat, but you will not double it!
