9' Quicksilver wood-floor inflatable with Tohatsu 5 will go about 10-12kts. But it is not enough power to get it to plane with a load of much more than about 225 lbs. The displacement speed is about 4 kts, but it doesn't need 5 hp to do that!

I would like to see a photo of the back of your 14' boat on a tailer with your three motors hangin on the transom parked next to a 29' Scarrab with 3 225s. Make a great post here - -

lol, SoLittle, I'm full of ideas here. How many
of them I actually use? ask my wife, she'll tell
ya.. Here he goes again. Trolling motor would
be bow mount. Most of the lakes I'll fish on
are smaller. largest being 9 miles long 1-2 miles
wide so a cheaper less fuel consuming motor
is all I want (for now). I could care less
if the motor planes the boat. I'm used to rowing
so anything will feel like luxury to me. That briggs motor will last all day on 3 gallons of gas from what I read. What I'll do is buy the motor
from a major discount retailer( I GANDER), try
it out and if i don't like it i still have the
reciept. I do that all the time, constantly
bringing stuff back to the MART. I'm still hoping a good priced(under $500), used 40-60 h.p. will fall in my lap by spring. I got a lead on some people near me that moved and left a boat behind.
free, my favorite price.

dont get the briggs. you can get a NICE used motor on ebay for cheaper and better. i just sold a 1973 evinrude 6hp on ebay tonight for 385 with money back guarantee. you cant get that with the briggs

they make lawn mowers, not marine equipment

if you look, you can find them on ebay.....

http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=4508446138

Re: How fast does your small ob push?

I had an ArkansasTraveler 14ft flat bottom with a 1971 20 horse Merc w/ an 11 inch prop. With 1 person it was scary. I had to move the tank to the front to help hold the bow down as well as move my weight fore. It ran well into the 30's and would pull a skier. I beat a 14 MonArk super widw that had a 35 Evinrude and several 25 OMC's on the same size boat. Don't try this...the boat was rated for 7.5 but hey it was 1974. This was not smart but fun! I still think the old 20 Mercs (1/2 a 50) were better than the Japanese Junk out their today!

Much chuckles pmm - - On the serious and sad side - Acouple of weeks ago a guy was running a 12' air boat out in the Everglades at what some folks estimated at at least 90 mph. Air got under the nose and she flipped comming down on her back. The driver was killed. Stupid and sad.

Obviously not a aerodynamics grad student...(airboat pilot)

Mike, I assume the fuel and batteries are up front...Good slip ratio too...calculates out to a 42 pitch. Am I close???? :D

So say I have a 12' jon boat, 120 lbs, 16" transom (don't know if that matters or not).
Around how fast will a 5hp get me?

Sorry, I can't do math.

Re: How fast does your small ob push?

my 130 lb. 12 footer with 4 hp. 2 stroke will do about half the speed of smell with only me (150 lb.) and 1 gallon of gas. I am hoping when I get my 9.8 working it will get on plane with 2 people.

Sounds pretty good to me. I just need to be able to get around.

If the motor doesn't have enought HP to plane (as dictated by hull design and weight) then the rule on displacement boat speed applies: Sq. root of length X 1.3 = speed in knots X 1.2 = speed in mph (you finally get to use that sq. root key on your pocket calculator).
If I understand this correctly, a longer boat has a greater displacement boat speed than a shorter boat. Yes, but Why?

Re: How fast does your small ob push?

I have a 12' mfg tri-hull like boat with an 8hp merc. With trolling motor, battery, gear, me(185lbs) and 6gal of gas I can hit 20mph under absolute perfect conditions. As far as that 5hp brigs goes I would not get it. A guy at a river I frequent has one and you can here him coming from a mile away. It also looks to be too bulky on top and too scrawny on the lower side.. If you want to go 4-stroke get a motor from a real outboard manufacture. For a few hundred more you can get one used from Iboats. I was very excited about that brigs motor until I saw one on the water, they offer it at such a good price I thought how could you go wrong! But if you plan on fishing with that thing good luck! You will need to cast about 4 miles away from the boat to an area your sound waves have not hit yet !!!
