after taking care of some minor problems on the motor, took it out fishing last night, started right up, 2 people and gear on my 1436 Jon boat. GPS marked my speed to hit 15mph. It didnt seem like i was going that fast, but its been a long time since i've had it running top notch, sounded fine, idled down perfect. I do have the fins attached to it if that makes any difference?

Sounds OK to me. Have you fine tuned the motor height, loading of people and the trim ???? may just improve things a little.

Re: How fast to expect 76 15hp Rude

I was out last night and checked mine with my GPS. I was using an Evinrude - 1982 - 15 HP. I had too much gear and only myself (who weighs too much). I have a 14 foot v-hull aluminum and my top speed with no wind blowing was exactly 17mph. I know I could do better but just can't seem to cull my tackle and accessories. I'm perfectly happy with the 17. Best of luck. Rick.

Just went through this drill, after raising my motor to the correct height (I have the same exact motor BTW) I clocked 22MPH with just me, me my wife and 2 kids in my 14ft v hull went 14mph. I suspect me and my fishing buddy around 15-16mph.

I have a '59 18hp motor. Not quite what you have, a few hp more. But with me and a buddy, boat, motor, gear, trolling motor, battery, etc (about 1000 lbs total), I was getting about 17-18mph on my semi-v utility boat. So it sounds about right what you are getting on a 14 ft aluminum jon.

a 25 is a better choice for a 14' boat and a 15 on a 12' ...15 mph is just too slow for me, I usually run several miles + with tackle boxes, coolers, live well (5 gal bucket) anchor, chain on a rope, seats and my fat butt and a friend or 2 or a couple of my kids. and I get there with not much time to spare...but if you got all day I guess 15 MPH is fine.

He's got a 1436 jon boat. I think 15 is the maximum rating. But I agree. I put my '67 33hp motor on this year (boat is rated for 35hp), and I get about 26-27 with about 1000lbs total weight. I cruise about 20-22 mph. On a lake that is a couple thousand acres, 20mph is about as slow as I would like to go when the waves are calm. I'll slow down to 15-18mph when the wind is stronger and I am hitting larger waves.

I use to had a 14-36 with a 30 on it..it was a little too much..the 25 is perfect in my opinion.
