what is the wot max rpm of the engine and the pitch of the prop? then the gear raton of the lower unit. after u determine the rpm of the prop shaft, u can then determine the theoretical speed by how fast the prop will rotate at wot. an example would be; wot rpm 5000. reduction ratio 2.3:1=2173.91 rpm. prop pitch=17in. 2174x17=35mph(convert inches to feet and multiply by 60 for min in hr and devide by 1 mile in ft). then subtract 10% for slippage and u will be close. 3 or 4 blade prop will be different for same pitch.

14 foot boats are not usually rated for more than 40-50HP. What is the boat rated for?

Drop a sixties 80HPV4 on that baby and she will be very fast (to sink)....

I have a 40 hp but I want more speed with a group of people on it

How many is a group? You have a relatively small boat to be having a 'group of people on it', especially if your going to put a motor that big on it... I agree with Chris--you may be biting off a bit more then you want to...

The reason your boat is slower with more weight is it just doesn't have the surface area to displace the water without causing it to sit low--so you end up pushing a lot of water, and its probably very tough to get on plane. By putting a larger motor on it, you will sit even lower in the water, and you would be just begging to get capsized. A much better option is to increase the size of the boat, or kick some people off your ride, or go slow.

14ft boats typically have a max capacity of people and gear of something like 600-700lbs.

I have a 15' skiff with a 30hp. pretty wide boat. Picture a 14ft carolina skiff and add a foot. With 4 people, which is what i comfortably will take, and full throttle I hit about 12mph. just plows the water. But that's all I want. Find a spot of anchor, drink beer, fish and have a good time. With just my wife and I it'll do between 18 and 22 depending on conditions which is on plane and very comfortable. I think people get a little carried away with their thinking sometimes. 40 horses on a 14ft boat. That sounds like it should scoot along pretty good. I would want more that 600lbs of people on it. 4 average adults, with gear, fuel, beer. that's maybe 800lbs or so.

I think sell it and it a 17 or 18 footer that will carry 6 people and is designed to or stick with what ya got and go slow.

We aren't trying to be mean, just safe.

The weight issue might not seem like a whole lot to worry about but consider where the weight is. It's at the very rear tip of the boat where it gets a lot of leverage. You add a few pounds to the rear and lever the front out of the water a little bit.. no big deal if it weren't for the fact that you need a certain amount of displacement to stay afloat which means the rear has to put as much boat down into the water as it lost in the front. That's only a big deal when you're too low in the water and your prop wash comes over the transom as you slow down. As soon as water starts flowing into a hole it doesn't stop until the hole is full. Any larger boat will see diminishing problems from this as available buoyancy and displacement increases but it will be pretty pronounced with a 14' runabout. Stick with the 40hp :)

I had a 14 ft chrysler cadet a few years ago. Put on a 50hp suzuki motor. Was absolutely the "funnest" thing I've ever messed with. Like a big jet ski. I believe I was actually past the rating for the boat. Danger is you could easily throw somebody off the boat with a quick turn. So my disclaimer...if you go with 60-80 you better be on an mtv show showing the dangers of doing stupid stuff. Having this size boat with that big of a motor would classify as falling in the "stupid" category. Though would be also in that "extreme, insane" category as well. It's our life, go big or go home, better safe than sorry, whatever your motto man. I would ask one thing, if you do put a motor on this size you have to put a video online because I would love to see it.

^ love the comments. Sometimes I think people post the questions just to laugh about the resposes they get. Stick with the 40hp and drink a beer untill you get to your destination.

On my skiff, memorial day weekend my wife and I were anchored near a beach on our floats having a great time. about five boats of all different sizes came by throwing off all sorts of wake. Guess what??? I had some water come over the transom..... pump got it all out quick. But my point is, with a bigger, heavier engine, that would happen very often. Not just in the rare time that a bunch of wake build into a huge one!

it all depends on how many people are clinging to the hull, and what percentage of those people are wearing pfd's. heres the formula..... weight of boat+weight of motor-pfd floatation range= speed. i did the rough calculations ( figuring in two people with a death grip on the overturned hull) and my math says the boat should reach a maximum descending velocity of 6mph in 30ft of water and hit the bottom stern first.
