13ft speedboat, v hull. 2 seats, very lightweight. got a merc 40hp with a 16p prop on. When in water it would just fly up and be in efficient so we put 50lb of ballast at the front to hold it down! How fast will this go in your experienced opinions.

Thanks

No guess here... but if you get a hand-held GPS or take one out of a car (one that has a back-up battery) you can easily check for yourself. That's what I did.

putting weight up front to bring the bow down is just going to slow your boat down......raise your motor to gain more top end speed and this will also bring the bow down
you will probabally see 35-40mph if setup correctly

do you mean raise the entire thing as in change the transom or do you mean adjust the trim so its tilted more.

Thanks

ally the more you move the foot away from the transom, the higher the motor is going to push the bow up. move you foot closer to the transom, and it will push the bow down. as you have done you need to balance the load.

post a picture of your boat, can't remember it.

heres a picture of it. I see what you mean about triming the motor, I will try that.

Thanks

if the picture is where you normally run the motor, no wonder it stands on it's tail. you should see 30-40mph. be careful that fast hitting a wave wrong, and you will be doing a lot of air time, possibly in the wrong direction.

That thing should do about 40-45 but i agree with putting more weight in the front will slow you down. To get the bow down, jack plate and raise the motor wil help a bit. On our STV's and Charger DL, gas tank etc is at the back, virtually no weight up front. Jack plate and hydro steering.

Well there is nothing at the front now and I have put the trim pin closest to the hull so when the hull is flat, the engine is slightly tilted backwards which should push the front down. I will try a couple of positions for best effect.

At the back there is fuel tank, bilge pump :D, and anchor. Oh and me.

Just another thought, will air time be ok. If I do become airborne, will the motor be ok not sucking up water for cooling for that time. I don't expect to be in the air much :) but just want to be prepared.

Ive just had a look at that picture again and realised thats not how the motor is run! Thats insane, there is a piece of wood in there for safety when towing. The engine is positioned so that it is flat when the boat is flat.

Re: how fast will this go??

air time is not good at all, it stresses the boat, bangs hell out of it landing. the prop looses grip, thus the motor over revs. you are only in the air for a second or two, so the cooling is not the problem. besides it's scary, you don't know how you are going to land, and control can be a real problem. thats for the voice of experience, i have been airborne, several times, never planed. of course i was running too fast for the conditions. my fault.

The first few times airborne you'll be needing to change at least your shorts to start with............................;);):)

Been airborne many times. takes some getting used to and it really wont hurt the cooling for the split second. If you land hard, it isn't easy on the boat. My DL loves getting air for some reason

Just remember to come off the power a little early when jumping. You don't want to be applying power as the prop losses grip of the water.

it's a good way to split a hull.

Noooo...... unless you have major structural problems and seriously need to rebuilt your boat your not going to hurt it jumping waves. Not on a cored speed boat and not even on a 80's bowrider (though maybe a Bayliner)

I have been airborne once in a cathedral hulled dory off a big wave and thats heavy for the size of it.

My speedboat is double skinned which is handy in some cases. Im not deliberately trying to get airborne and will not go head on into a massive wave fast but it is almost inevitable that with me driving :) and big waves, it will happen.
