I have a 1986 bayliner capri with a 85 force. The gentelman that services my engine said the engine is in "very" good condition, and so is the boat. My question is, how fast should the boat run??

Re: How Fast??

i'm guessin that mm is on target for yer speed. yer probably gonna have to wait to find out for sure though till ya splash it. get yerself a gps and then ya'll know how fast it is..... if ya don't have a gps, i've found my speed by useing my buddy as a pace boat, he has a gps..... fwiw, wot rpms of the engine is much more critical than what the top speed of the boat is....

How big is the boat? If it's 15-17ft should do in the mid 30's, any bigger and it's under powered.

I believe the 85 horse was on the 16 Capri and If all is right you might even see 40, but don't count on it. The boat will have to be empty with no soaked foam. I have driven and skiied behind this boat and they're OK if they're right. Good luck.

Remember the seller wants to get your money from your pocket to his so everything he tells you about what he has wil be "In good condition." Ckeck & verify everything yourself. Condition is a lot more important than wheter it'll run 35 or 50 mph.

How much are you paying for that thing?
Both the motor and that particular boat are not known for their quality.

We had a 83 Rinker 17FT BR with a 70 Evinrude. Ran 35 tops with 2 people. Abd that was on the soso MPG gauge.

I have an 89 Bayliner Capri 1700 that is just under 17ft, with a force 85hp and it will usually run high 30's. With only me in it and almost out of gas I have seen almost 45mph. Hope this helps...as it all depends on the size of your boat and the amount of weight it contains...

Re: How Fast??

They're always fastest the first day they come home with you, and then they gain weight. I meant the boat, not the wife . . . "Honey, I was talking about that little Bayliner. You remember, right? Oh, come on, don't cry, really, I was referring to that cute little . . . Oh jeez, I've done it again . . . No, you were the cute little, uh, eh, are the cute little . . . Do you wanna go to Nordstrom? Yeah, I thought so . . . " Works every time ;)

I've got a 95 Bayliner 1600 capri with a 90 Force. When I'm by myself it will hit 43 MPH. With my family (wifey, two small kids under 50 lbs) it will run about 37 MPH.

Re: How Fast??

Buying a boat

1st you need to decide what you want to use it for, fishing, cruising, or water sports.

2nd how many people adults, children you want on board of the average outing.

3rd outboard, inboard-outboard, or inboard power plant.

4th Budget, what you want to pay, and what you are willing to pay, when you find
Exactly what you want.

You can hire a marine surveyor, to inspect the boat, or you can do it yourself.

You are mainly looking for soft spots in the deck, transom, cracks, all signs of a rotten, under frame.

The motor should be clean, no spots where the paint is discolored, or pealing from heat, having run hot. Compression should be atleast 100psi, and within 10% of each other,
Spark on all cylinders, good pee stream, check lower unit for water in oil.

The overall condition of the boat will tell you a lot, as to how it has been maintained.

A 30 year old boat motor combo, may be in better condition, than a 3 year old.
