When I had to yank my engine, my first thought was "how am I gonna reach overr/into the boat to get to it". How do you plan to extract the engine once disconnected?

Oh...why do you have to pull it?

Depends on what engine and boat, and what's around it to prevent it from coming out. Many boat manufacturers make it almost impossible to remove the engine without taking the boat apart.

the hardest part to pulling an engine is the pulling itself. If you have a backhoe/overhead crane/engine hoist(if one will work without mods your lucky) then the job will be very easy, and the average joe, with the proper tools could get an engine out in 2-3 hours(rusted bolts, seized parts may extend this time)

even a large beam in your shop(engine will weight ~700lbs) and a chain block works well too...

it has a knock in the back of the motor think it might be flywheel. boat is a 97 coral by sunbird easy to get to the motor didnt know how hard it would be to get the the bolts going to the outboard part

What engine and drive do you have.

Any ideas on what the knock could be? It sounds like it is coming frome the back of the motor and it is irregular might stop for a second or two then start back.

Pull the outdrive and check the ujoints. You can also start the engine with the drive off, and see if the noise is still there. You can put water to the engine by hooking it directly to the hose going from the transom to the engine.

Did they still have shutters in '97?

Shutters are in the exhaust collectors bolted to the transom. they are little flaps that prevent water from entering the engine when (a) you back the boat into the water & off the trailer & (b) water from rushing in through the exhaust when you slow down , stop or have a wash / wave towards the back of the boat.

Most of the time they break off without knowing after years of use.

They may also rattle at times, i am not sure about knocking though...
