i have a 1994 volvo penta sx outdrive (1.66 ratio) which has either a stripped gear or the cone clutch (from what i am told) is gone. Problem is local repair shop cannot get a tech to take it off for two weeks and then the charge and travel time is crazy.

i would like to take it off and bring the drive to them for repair, problem is i really do not know how hard it is or if any specail tools are needed.

Anyone know how to do this?

remove back cover, three 3/8 bolts, disconnect shift cable and remove trunion from threaded end of cable. disconnect both trim rams and the trim ram pin at the aft end of drive. remove six 5/8 nuts and pull drive, sx cobras drive is heavier and a little more akward than alpha drive so it helps to have a friend nearby

It depends on your experience, but it is really not that bad if all you're doing is taking it off and putting it back on. It is not that hard to take off. I just took mine off yesterday and replaced the seal and gimball bearing. Seal is quite a pain to get off. Never done it before and it took me, with the help of a friend about 45 minutes to get off and 2 hrs to put it back on. You will need some help taking it off because it weighs quite abit. You could do it by yourself with the help of a cherry picker. Putting it back together is the trickier part. If you haven't worked on many things in your life, I would probably just let them do it.

do not need to unclamp bellows, bellows are not connected to the drive unit

Re: ?? how hard to remove SX outdrive

any idea on what happen here. i installed new engines. Boat ran great last week, cruising at 30 knots (3400 rpm) when port engine revs up to 6000 rpms.

i shut it down right away and did not get forward or reverse since then. It is not a spun prop changed that already. in forward i can spin the prop both cw and CCW in reverse I can spin the prop cw but not ccw, it locks.

When the boat rev'd up to 6000 rpm i heard no grinding or any other type of noise. I know the shifter is ok and the cable is connected. i also know that the spline output shaft is turning from the engine. the coupler is fine also.

any idea. someone stated it might be the cone clutch? or busted gear.

Did you chech the engine alignment before reinstalling the outdrive after replacing the engine?

Re: ?? how hard to remove SX outdrive

i did not install the engines Neimic Marine in new bedford mass did the work. But my rating of them is not high since they set the firing order for my 302 to 351's.. sounded like popcorn popping the first day. Anyway it did run fine the first time out for about a 1/2 mile then the problem hit. no loud noise prior or grinding sounds in the prop shaft. Can the cone clutch go that fast or is it a slow type of wear?

i'm confused, i thought you were looking for advice on how to remove the drive??

would have been better for you to explain the running issue in the original thread/post, then ask about removing the drive to do some tests

Re: ?? how hard to remove SX outdrive

i already got the answers on removing the drive, i was jsut trying to see if anyone knew what the problem could be or if they had a probelm like this. I tried the spun prop theory, i un-bolted the cover (3 bolts) and move the shifter to see if the linkage moved and it did. So now the drive comes off. i was going to jsut take off the lower unit, however another marine service place told me they need the whole drive, because of the cone clutch. Just trying to figure out if it is the clutch, a worn or busted gear or maybe a busted shaft. The problem I keep having is how the prop locks up in one direction when shifted in reverse.
