How hot is to hot?

This is probably going to be hard to answer but I'll ask any way. I'm still struggling with my 60' Evinrude Sportwin 10hp. As in when I'm lucky enough to get it running it will not run more than maybe a minute at most and usually I have to have it at WOT. Anything lower and it shutters pretty good, sputters and then quits. Yes, I have the needle(s) set according to factory specs and suggestions here but to no avail. Anyway....that's a whole different subject and set of questions. My newest concern is that the few times I've had it running for a minute or less I noticed by accidentally touching the lower unit that it was hotter than heck! I mean too hot to keep your hand on for more than a second. Is that normal? Is it possible that because it's sitting in and circulating (when running obviously) a stagnant barrel of warm water as opposed to a nice cold lake? I have never bothered to reach down and touch the lower unit on my other outboard when I'm out fishing so I have no reference to go by. Something this old surely doesn't have any sort of built in overheating fail safe thing-a-ma-jigy does it? Now there's some technical terminology. :D Also, I have a brand spankin' new thermostat in it as well. Any thoughts? Thanks.

Re: How hot is to hot?

While I'm waiting I thought I'd take a couple pictures to clarify something. I was assuming that the big hole in the rear or the lower unit was the exhaust port and the two small holes just below that and back farther (see pics) was where the water is supposed to pee out from the water pump, because that is currently what is happening. If the water is not supposed to be coming out of the mentioned 2 holes (there's one on each side btw) then indeed my motor is over heating and maybe that's why it's shutting down? Let me know what I'm supposed to be seeing when it's running please. Thanks

Your water level looks a little low, put a little more water in that barrel. A water spray should be coming out what you have labeled in your first picture as the "exhaust port". If its not spitting water shut it down and inspect the cooling system and impeller, do not run it to the point where it shuts off or you will surely destroy the motor.

Also, you shouldn't be running wide open in a barrel... that's not good for the motor and can also destroy it.

You probably need to check the compression, spark and clean/rebuild the carb... if the coils have never been replaced they will need to be replaced... its easy and we can walk you through the process. You can buy most everything you need here at iboats and it won't cost you an arm or leg.

water should be spitting out of the large exhaust hole .your water pump impeller is pooched most likely.

The mtr is sitting to high in the barrel or else you need more water. The water pump has to be completely submerged to operate properly. I would say about another 6 inches higher than what it is.

Re: How hot is to hot?

Okay, there was more water in there a week ago when I started testing. I will dump it and put some fresh water in it and take it back up higher. I thought the water just had to be above the little metal "intake plate" with holes in it which it is. So here's my next question....no one said whether any water should be coming out of the 2 small holes on the side (in the second pic). Yes, I get water spraying along with exhaust from the main big port but I also get a steady stream out of both sides of the 2 small holes. Is that supposed to happen or is that a sign that the water pump (is it an actual pump or just an impeller??) has gone out? Lastly, I have already done everything you have suggested Cap'n Chaos. I've been covering that in a couple other threads and didn't want to dbl post all the same info. here. Hope that's the right thing to do.

I just want to know if water is supposed to come out of those 2 holes. Thanks.
