I'm doing transom repair on my boat and found that the wiring is shot on the trim sending units. I'm kinda on a budget and don't know if i can afford to replace them right now. my question is do I have to have them or would I be ok without them. Also how hard would it be to go back and fix them later.

Thanks

Many many boats out there with non operational senders. The starboard side one is for the gauge, the port is the limit switch for the trim system. As long as you're happy without the gauge, and understand that to get the drive to trim up you'll need to either bypass the switch at the trim pump, or use the TRAILER switch to move the drive... No drama...

Replacing them at a later date. Can be done with the drive still in place, but it's a bit harder...

My old boat didn't have a gauge and the sender wires were just tied up. Both sensor wires were corroded away so it didn't matter anyway. I changed the trim up switch so that it acted as trailer so that I didn't have to use the trailer switch to trim up. The boat would porpoise pretty bad if it was anything above level on the trim so I could never get close to what full trim up would be anyway.

Trim sender on the starboard side, wouldn't even bother with it. Haven't looked at mine in ten years:rolleyes:. The trim limit on the port side, I would make an effort to get it working again. Depending on how bad the wires are messed up you could splice them back together with good solder connections and coat with liquid tape (several thin layers) to waterproof. If that does not get it working, chances are that it is dirty or corroded inside. Take it off, disassemble and clean it up, should be able to get it working, saved mine that way. Just IMHO;)
