Hi all -- I'm looking at a runabout with a 1998 50hp Evinrude outboard with oil injection. Claims to have 10-15 hours per year of run time (original owner).

I have no idea about the quality/reliability of this outboard.

Any thoughts on it? Anything I should look out for?

Thanks!

Ask the owner if you can do a compression check on the motor. If you get good even numbers, you're probably OK.

great motor, i have several that vintage.

BUYING A USED MOTOR

overall condition, condition of the place you are buying it from, usually tells you how they care for things. compression 100 + psi, and within 10% of each other, good strong blue spark, no water in the lower unit oil. look for discolored paint, (sign of over heat at
one time, also scarred up bolts, as why. have them start it. if they fail to put it in a barrell or tank, or on muffs, or in the water, to start it they don't know what they are doing. best yet is to take it for a 30 min to 1 hour test run. also if remote controlled motor, the controls should come with it.

Thanks, very helpful. So no concerns about the oil injection system?

Also, is it relatively fuel efficient as far as outboards go? It will be on a 16ft fiberglass runabout.

run or thumb is 5 gallons per hour at wide open throttle. i have a 93, and 2005, love both of them. the 98 has the VRO2 mixing system, which is much better than the VRO. if you are uncomfortable about the oil system, you can easily convert it to Pre mix in about 15 minutes.
i have the instructions. i converted my 93, because it came without oil tank.
