How is Walmart for tires?

Need tires on our SUV. It has 185000 miles now and I'm not sure how much longer we will have it. Walmart has the lowest price on Goodyear Wrangler, and the lowest price for balancing, stems, disposal, etc

Never bought tires from Walmart before and I was wondering if they are on part with Sears (ugh) for quality service personel.

Mark, never had anything done at Wal-mart, but can give you my .02 worth on the goodyears.
My new 2006 Jeep Wrangler came with them and before I had 4000 miles on the jeep, all five had been repaired and one replaced.

I have bought several sets of tires from Walmart. I have always been happy with the service and the price. I bought a set of tires about four years ago and had one front tire wear out pretty bad in about 10000 miles. It was due to poor alignment partially. I took it back to Walmart and even though both the Manager and I knew it was mostly my fault he replaced it (prorated of course). I think for the money, they provide excellent service.

Recently put 4 tires on the daughters SUV and 2 new front tires on my SUV from Wal-Mart.We went with the AT Liberators.They are made by Michelin for Wal-Mart and are 2 polyester 2 steel and 1 nylon tread ply tires and 2 polyester sidewall.

All I can say is, you get what you pay for, and each store is different. I've heard of some Walmart stores as being horrible for auto service.

A locally owned store is more likely to have a higher price, but rely on service to keep you coming back. If you have a hoopty of a car, and don't care too much, Walmart is usually a great deal. But if you have a concern about possibly scuffing up a rim or something, I don't know if I'd recommend it.

See what their balance warranty is as well, as that might help you make a decision.

I buy my tires from a local guy or wally world. The local guy usually has what I want if I'm looking for a mud grip. In my Hyndai he can't compete so he don't try. He keeps 2 of the common small car sizes as a convience (sp?). Walmart does my tires and my oil. $16.88 for the oil and I can barely buy it for that. Be prepared for a LONG wait as they want you to buy while ya wait. Other than the wait I've been real happy with them. Another of the reasons I like Walmart for tires is the warranty. We went to San Anto 2 years ago and had a blow out at about 12:30 am. I shredded it so bad ya couldn't tell how much tread there was. In the morning I went to the local Walmart to get it replaced. I didn't have my aperwork but I was in the comp. so no problem. They adjusted it to the level of my best tire, I paid about $20 for a $85 tire that had almost 40,000 miles on it.

I just had to put tires on my company car, checked a national chain, a local guy, and sears. I went with the local guy. I had to also get some service done so I took it to the Ford dealer. I just asked how much they were and they were lower than everyone! I had made a committment to the local guy so he still got my business, but boy was I surprised.

If you have a Costco near you might give them a look, the one by me had Michelins at $60.00 off for a set of four. I bought tires for my pickup there no problems so for.

Be careful of Michelins. I was told the other day they make at least 2 lines of tires. The good ole Michelins which have "Michelin" written on the sidewall once, and the "Walmart Michelins" which have Michelin written on the sidewall twice, on opposite sides of outside sidewall.

I always have and always will suppot my local mechanic. We have known him for a good 15 years now, and he always is helping us out, getting us deals whenever he can, and if we ever have an issue he checks it out for nothing.

I bought four tires from him last October for my truck. I told him, I didnt have much to spend, but wanted a good tire. I got Dayton Timberline's. They have an aggressive tread but are still quiet. I have about 13,000 miles on them and they are wearing almost perfectly. Not a single issue, and they grip the snow exceptionally well.

Pony, that's great, not very much loyalty in the world today, but that's what keeps the little man in business, he will change a bulb or maybe a fuse and say catch ya next time........in hopes that he may get that tire sale when you need them, unfortunately it usually doesn't happen

SBN, I have to ask what happened to the tires that all of them needed repair work or replacement. I've had the Wrangler RT/S on my F-150 for over a year or so and they seem like decent tires to me. Also have a 2003 Explorer with 80,000 on it and it still have the original Wranglers on it. Just curious as to what the problem was. Also, Like OB said, those Liberators from Walmart are great tires too. That's what I replaced on my truck and they still had tons of tread left. Just a bit too noisy on the highway for me. I had them on there for 4 years with no problems...

If you have aluminum wheels take pictures of them before you bring them to WalMart. They'll never be the same again.

I take mine to American Tire, also known as Discount Tire. THE BEST SERVICE I've received in a retail setting EVER.

Not an answer to your question, but my experiences with them have been so good I'm always looking for a way to promote their business.

I have to disagree with you there. My truck had those crap tires on it when I got it. WORST tire I have ever been on for traction. I couldn't get any grip in the rain on those things, and they weren't even worn all the way down. Just over half the tread was gone on them, and they sucked bad. Replaced them with Bridgestone Dueler APT IIIs, and it was an enormous difference in traction. I can actually grip stuff now, and I don't get stuck in my own backyard anymore(seriously, I'm not kidding).

I even got stuck on a boat ramp once with the LIberators, with nothing more than just the trailer behind me. Not a problem with the Deulers now though.

I'll add: I NEVER(never never never) buy a tire based on treadlife. I am far more interested in the tire grabbing the road, than worrying about how long the dang thing will last. Tires can usually be had for under $500... an accident costs me WAY more than that if the vehicle can't stay on the road, and stop.

I guess we all have our own experiences with respect to tire application on a given vehicle speedwagon.I'm not experiencing any of the difficulties you listed above with repect to traction or pulling a boat out of a launch.I did have terrible luck with a set of Goodyear Wranglers on the front of a 4 wheel drive Toyota pickup with steering knuckle suspension though.After 10,000 miles they had more dishes than a china cabinet.I'm sure others on different applications would have a better opinion of them.
Fact is,I have the Liberators on two mid size suvs and have no complaints.Not saying by any stretch of the imagination that I consider these to be the most superior tire that money can buy,but was using them as a referal to a guy that's looking to equip a rig ,that he may part with soon,that he claims has 185,000 plus miles ,with a sufficient tire.The fact that he was inquiring as to whether Wal-Mart carried a decent enough tire,was also a consideration as to my recommendation.
