Hi Guys. This question is from a ,Duh Newbie, and will represent my lack of knowledge very clearly.
Recently purchased a 22 ft Starcraft with a 3.7 L inboard and i believe a Generation one Aplha Stern Drive. Got to operate the boat before i bought it, was on the water several hours and like it.I have never operated it from a dead stop. Started it on the weekend with the muffs and ran it up to operating temp and it seems to work fine. Question: I pulled the throttle handle out and forward while spinning the starter to start the engine . Where do i go from there. The drive did not engage while i ran it. How do i get the drive to engage. Must the leg it be in the down position to connect and engage. What is the press style botton under the throttle handle for. Someone please walk me through this procedure in the simplest terms . Thanks in advance. TheBoyner

After the engine warms up, pull the throttle back to the neutral position. The handle should pop back in after being pulled out for throttle only. Then just moving the lever forward or back will change gears.
Yes, have the drive down anytime you are running the engine.

Well don't try to engage the drive while on the muffs. I think that is obvious. I'm very new myself with boats. Throttle handle vertical = neutral. Depress button under handle and move forward or backward to engage forward or reverse drive. Hope that helps.

Re: How it works

dont pull the handle out if you want the drive to engage. that disengages the gear shift. pull pack to neutral, then move forward for forward, and pull back for reverse.

Or maybe it is ok to engage the gears?
