How large should I go?

I have decided not to rebuild my broken, not loved Force 120 engine. I am now in search of a newer, bigger engine! Yeah! <br />Question: My boat says that max hp for the boat is 175! I found a good price on a 200 Johnson. Is that too big for my boat? I have a 93' Bayliner Trophy walk around. It is in great shape. What determines the max hp? Some one mentioned the transom had something to do with it. <br /><br />Any ideas? or opinions? <br /><br />Sometimes bigger isn't always better. Well at least that is what the little lady tells me. ;)

Howdy, Billy.<br /><br />If you are looking for someone with any sense to encourage you to overpower a boat in a public forum you are probably out of luck.<br /><br />There are places where it is illegal to mount an engine over the max, places where it is illegal to operate one, etc, etc.<br /><br />In case of an accident you would be vulnerable to charges of willful negligence, unsafe operation, etc.<br /><br />It is not worth the risk for a couple of mph.<br /><br />Look for a 175.<br /><br />Good luck. :)

This is my first boat and it broke 2nd time out. So not much experience here on my part. Sounds like going bigger is bad. That is fine, I wont do it. Why is it bad though?<br /><br />Billy

The boat is build with materials, thickness and structure that will all function together safely under most circumstances.<br />The moment you insert too much power,too much weight on the transom and therefore stronger vibrations, you will have disturbed a balance that is needed to operate the boat safely and chances are that somebody ends up dying because of it!

Thank you rolmops. Like I said, I am new to boating. And safetly is important to me. I was just curious. I didn't know if it was just a law or a safetly thing. I am always trying to learn. Thanks for all your input. 175hp is max for me. See you all on the water.

here in Maine, It is not illegal to overpower.<br /><br />a 200 where they say the max is 175.. I wouldnt think twice about it. Saftey rateings are always lower then actual ability, and thats a fact in this modern world of litigation.<br /><br />It is still the operaters responcibilty weather over or under powered, But we are only talking 25hp here there aint that much difference between a 175 and a 200, whats that 12 whole % more power? big woop.. weight on the transom would be my only concerm, but I dout the 200 is that much heaver. The only thing you will really notice is faster fuel consomption, there wont be that great a speed difference.<br /><br />Bottom line, you have to drive it. You are the one who has to inspect your boat, decide how much throttle to apply at any given moment. Everyone talks about this subject like the 200 will rip the transom off if you twich the wheel. Well, any motor could do that under the right circumstance. having the power dosent mean you must use it.<br /><br />This Opinion is based on personal experiance. I have been around boats for over 25 years. Bottom line here is what do you feel is safe? Look at all those mini speedboat racers, By definition, most of those boats are way overpowered, well over the 12% we are talking here. ( yeah yeah, I know what your thinking, I have sean those boats flip too, but that is driver error,,, pushing the envelope reguardless of condition,. I should think a Recreational boater isnt exactly the same thing. Any fool who races runs much more rish then any rec boater. I wouldnt run a 300 on it, but a 200,, No Problems.

Billy<br />Is 25 hp over max unsafe, probably not. The Max power rating is a saftey rating, it is not just weight but the width of the transom, type hull, total displacement, ect. Out here only allow in racing and expermential craft. If you get towed in by Coast Guard they will check it and I belive site you. Of course probably a 1 in 1000 chance will ever be towed by Coast Guard. Out here your insurance company is going to ask size and model of your boat and type engine and HP. If your over the max probably will not be able to get insurance but if you can will be put in the high risk class and PAY EXTRA. So check with your insurance company before you buy.<br />Have lots of safe fun on the water. I would reccomend you take the whole family and go to a Coast Guard Aux or Power Squardron boating saftey class. My family has been one time and I been 4 times. It is a good way to learn all the rules of the water, saftey gear and Fun also. I mean do you know what to do if a approching boat sounds his horn one time? Two times? 3 times? or 5 or mote times. Do you know what a Green or Red buoy means, what it shape or number will be? Like I said the classes are a fun way to get up to speed and a lot of fun. Cost usually free but you have to buy the training Book but very cheap. Some Insurance company also give a discount when you pass.

Thanks for all the input. I will most likely go with the max and not over. As for a safety class, I was in the Navy for over 8 years and went throught those classes a lot. It's just that we never covered Hp because on an Aircraft carrier, Hp is a totally different world. Thanks again for all the help. <br /><br />Billy

There used to be a set formula for hp ratings, using boat length and transom width. Since the mid-1970s(I think) for boats about 12-14 feet, they've used a test course. The boat has to run the test course sucessfully with the max engine. Supposedly, hull designs improved partly due to the new rating system.

Your in luck. I recommend you put a Johnson V8 on that bad boy and let'er rip.<br /><br />Joking, but it's important to remember that the CG plate is a recommendation. <br />For example my Hydrostream is rated for 145 but most are rigged with 200 or more. Or a better example is an Allison xr-2002 rated for 135. I bet 90% uv'em have a 300 drag or a 260 with N20. Your Bayliner type builders will build a boat in mind that it probably won't have more than a 115 on it but there are well built boat out there that the strength of the hull has nothing to do with the CG rating. <br />Lemme put it to you this way. The old merc 175 was basically the same motor as the 200 except for differences in reeds and port location, sooo the difference in power didn't show up until a certain RPM -- If your worried about police then get 175 stickers. If your worried about insurance then get a 175 mid with serial number. If your just worried about it then you should probably do what JB says and get a 150 or 175 and be slow.

i had this same ?? with my 94-1802 trophy and was told by bliner that the weight was more of an issue. example<br />1994 force 120= 284 lbs- j/e 94 120/140tx= 378 lbs<br />thats a big difference but still within hp rating.<br />-<br />in your case;<br />93 force 120= 284 lbs--- j/e 185/200= 448 lbs<br />93 force 150= 336 lbs--- j/e 175= 380lbs<br /> mercury weights 93 yr<br />135= 404 lbs-- 150= 404 lbs-- 175= 395 lbs<br />-<br />just to be safe with mine and the xtra 90+ lbs i put a 1/4 aluminum plate on the transom for support and it also got the motor off the transom molding <which to this day every new boat ive looked at has them angled this way ??><br />im still within the hp rating but the weight is in question.<br />at the time someone over powered it with a j/e 175 and the weight was the issue, then when i asked about the 120 j/e- bliner said that was ok.<now the weight isnt an issue because its a 120> if you look at the weight between the two-120 vs 175 its only 17 lbs. <br />i know it confussed me too.
