How long can I leave gas in carb on my 1956 Fastwin 15hp?

Normally, I run the carb dry when I'm done boating for the day. Occasionally, I forget to do it, though.

Is it a big deal if I occasionally leave the gas in the carb for a few days until I take the boat out again? (I run Seafoam additive in every tank of gas).

Not a big deal at all. Just remember to drain it before off-season storage.

I use Sta-bil in every tank that way if the engine sits with gas in the carbs it will be okay.

and you don't need to run it dry after every use. Keep in mind you are also running the cylinders dry at the same time, that is creating a very short term lean condition and more importantly reducing the oil in your cylinders and crankcase that is used to prevent corrosion.

The seafoam in the gas will keep it fresh. Leave it in there until you winterize it. That's my opinion anyways.

That's why I asked the question. I had figured running the carbs dry not be a great thing for the carbs/motor, but I've read here and there how they SHOULD be run dry every time.

Never run a two stroke dry it is not good for it. You are effectively running the engine with no oil when you run it out of gas. It is hard on the bearings and cylinders. For wintering just drain the float bowl.

The "I've done it my whole life and never had a problem" is faulty logic, For instance, throughout my childhood, I never rode in a "child car seat" (hadn't been invented yet) and never even once got killed in a car wreck, therefore I don't need a special seat for my kids.

It definately leans out as it runs dry, the evidence is in the RPM increase just before it shuts down.

The reason so many people can do it and get away with it, is that the few revolutions it can make as it runs dry does such a small amount of damage that a seldom-used motor will become junk from some other cause (forgot the oil, water pump not maintained, ignored the water in the gearbox, hit a stump, sank the boat, traffic accident, you get the picture), or get sold off, before the running-dry damage does it in. I mean, if you only get it out a few times a year, you might well be better off running it dry and avoiding the old-gas headache.

It's just a theory.

I won't be running the carb dry anymore. Have only done it 4 times so far. Kinda figured that the Seafoam would prevent any varnish etc from building up.

Does Anybody pull the little drain plug on the bottom of the carb?

I've always been afraid to mess with carbs in any capacity(incl draining them)cause they are so 'touchy' IMO. I cleaned the carb on my snowblower this winter and ended up bending the linkage all to hell trying to get the carb off. :D

At some point I'll have to clean my Fastwin carb, but I'm delaying touching it cause the motor runs well. I'm tempted to Decarb the motor cause I have no idea about how the motor was maintained before I bought it, but fear that something will dislodge and clog a jet is preventing me from doing it. So for now, I'm sticking with adding Seafoam to every tank.

Leaving the carb full of fuel is asking for trouble....especially with todays formulation. I prefer to run them dry.

i have an old 55 evinrude. It has two carbs, the top carb feeds the bottom. If you run this motor dry everytime you are runing the top cylinder w/o fuel/lube EVERYTIME!!!!!!! This is not good for the motor. you should not run the motor to clear the carbs of fuel. there is a lower drain screw in each carb for this purpose. With that said the only reason to drain the carbs is if you are not planing on using the motor for an extended period of time. My motor has gone w/o use for a month and still had fuel in the carbs. Make sure the gaskets are not leaking. IMO, keeping fuel in the carbs is better than draining them and letting the small amount of fuel/oil evapoate and leave oil residue/varnish. Some ppl cause more problems trying to prevent a problem. just leave it alone dammit!!!

I used to think this was true with my 3-cyl, but have since rethought it. If the outlet from the upper carb is at the bottom of the bowl, then you are correct and the upper runs dry first. But, if it's at the top of the bowl, to where fuel can't drain from the upper to the lower, I believe they'll starve together, at the same time.

That said, it's way too much bother for me to run 'em dry or drain 'em. I put seafoam in the gas and haven't had an obstruction in years. That's just my own experience.

Whats the suggested ratio of Seafoam to fuel/oil ? Which is better Stabil for marine use or Seafoam ?

tex- i think i got that from you awhile back, thanks for the update

seafoam says 1 ounce per gallon for regular use, 2 ounce per gallon for cleaning.

I just did the dunk decarb method and thats a whole bottle in 1 gallon of fuel!

I'm using 2 ounces per gallon. How long can I continue to do this to clean the motor?
