Re: How long can I leave gas in carb on my 1956 Fastwin 15hp?
The "I've done it my whole life and never had a problem" is faulty logic, For instance, throughout my childhood, I never rode in a "child car seat" (hadn't been invented yet) and never even once got killed in a car wreck, therefore I don't need a special seat for my kids.
It definately leans out as it runs dry, the evidence is in the RPM increase just before it shuts down.
The reason so many people can do it and get away with it, is that the few revolutions it can make as it runs dry does such a small amount of damage that a seldom-used motor will become junk from some other cause (forgot the oil, water pump not maintained, ignored the water in the gearbox, hit a stump, sank the boat, traffic accident, you get the picture), or get sold off, before the running-dry damage does it in. I mean, if you only get it out a few times a year, you might well be better off running it dry and avoiding the old-gas headache.
It's just a theory.
