my 1985 90 hp was parked in my driveway two weeks ago, it was flushed at that time and the pee trail was highly visible. I went to start it today and it fired up but there was no sign of water circulation by way of pee stream. I ran it for about a minute, in a water trough and got nothing. Do you think I burned it?

Probably not burned.

I would also check to see if the hole has been plugged. Mud daubers get in mine all the time.

Agree. Just because you have no telltale does not mean that the engine overheated. The telltales do plug up, esp if you fish and run your engine in shallow water...

How much water was in your trough ??--------Water needs to be 6" above the pump !------At full throttle damage can occur in 10 seconds on a complete loss of cooling water.---------Idling in nuetral it will take a long time for the horn to come on.--------You have tested your over heat horn ???

very unlikely you did any damage. Blow out the tell tale (compressed air, WD-40, maybe a thin piece of fuel hose or the snorkel from that WD-40 can). Dunk the leg deep, and don't rev it. Shut it down if no water at the tell tale or exhaust port -- should pump within a few seconds. If feeling really cautious, hook up a flusher with the leg in water to make sure water is pushed up to the head, then remove the muffs and see if it is pumping on its own (tell tale will operate with the flusher if the tube is clear -- if stops when flusher removed, pretty good indicator the water pump impeller needs to be replaced.) OR if really concerned -- if you know the impeller hasn't been replaced in a while or been running in salty or sandy, just replace the impeller before trying it again.

If you hang the motor above a good oak and birch bonfire, the aluminum starts to melt in about 20 minutes. Fully melted in about an hour

I know a few people that worked for Carl Kiekhaefer back when he had sales bonfires hanging "the enemy's motors" from a metal tripod above fire
