So im trying to test my boat in my house before taking it to the water, and im putting water to the drive, but it is not sucking the water trough those litle holes... The temp is not rising but is not sucking water... Is this a problem? or how long should it take to start sucking water??? Thanks

First of all, what engine and drive do you have??
And it sounds like you have the drive in a large bucket???

Better is clamp on "muffs" that you attach the hose to..
However to answer your question, the lower impeller would begin "sucking" water instantly...

The engine is a 5.7 Mercruiser... Yes i have it with a muff attached to a water hose... And it is connected to the lower impeller but it is not sucking.. like the water is not getting release from underneath the drive.

Re: How long does it take

it could be a problem.

maybe you could tell us an aprox. year + kind of drive?

have ya replaced the impeller recently?
it's usually the first place to look for cooling problems.

Sure is a problem. If there is no water surrounding the temp sender, by the time it registers an overheat, it will be too late. Also, with no water mixed with the exhaust, it doesn't take long to burn up the water shutters and exhaust bellows.

I just replaced my impeller. It is easy and quick. When you open the housing it will probably be in peices, check it out, let me know what you find.

Re: How long does it take

someone else will have to help ya there.

but me, not knowing anything about your set up would start by getting the mercrusier service manual that's applicable so i knew how to work on that rig. first place i'd be looking at in the s/m would be is at how to replace the impeller. on your's you may not even have an impeller in the drive, i don't know. it may be mounted on the ft. of the engine and be belt driven. the service manual will tell you the facts.... they usually have trouble shooting guides in them too. there can be lots of reasons for overheat or cooling problems. the sea water pump is just a good place to start since it has to work proper to just get the water up to the engine. which it don't sound like yours is doing.. + they are usually an annual preventative maint. service item that many owners don't bother with depending on how the boat was cared for.

Just curious, what is the water pressure you are using? Are you worried about too much pressure, and not turning the hose all the way up?
This may just be that simple.....

So you are not getting any water discharge at all near and or around the transom ? is there any water circulating through the block? Once running did you check to see if any water was reaching the t-stat housing? Does your temp gauge register anything @ all? If any of these issues are not being met as said I would definately replace lower end impellar 1st and then re-check all these issues. Good luck!!!!!

Re: How long does it take

If the impeller housing is cracked or not sealed properly, it can also suck in exhaust gases with the incoming water & drop pressure significantly or break the vacuum completely in which case you don't get enough pressure to push the water up to the engine. Impeller is definitely the first place to check. I'd take the hose off the t-stat housing where the water comes in from the outdrive & see if it's getting pumped up there. If nothing comes out of that hose on the engine side, you have an impeller issue. If water is coming out of that hose & it's under decent pressure, I'd be concerned about a blockage somewhere on the engine cooling system.

Re: How long does it take

Is this a new to you boat, or have you run it this way before?

Sometimes boats that have the raw water pump up on the engine have modified the water intake to be a scoop on the back/bottom of the hull and not use the outdrive plumbing at all.
