If you buy a new boat motor, or say buy one that is 5 or 10 years's old and been very well taken care of how long could you expect to get performence out of it? Would a 200hp last longer than a 5hp? or vice-a-versa? Is 30 years reasonable? This is assuming all the conditions are right for the boat motors.
Thanks for any idea's or thought's on this question, thanks and as always "peace"

Re: how long will a motor and lower unit last?

Howdy, heaty1. With good care, little or no abuse and regular preventive maintenance these machines seem to have no limit. There are lots of 30-35 year old units still in regular use, and the ones made since the middle 80s will last even longer. I haven't noticed a longer life in either small or large motors, except that little ones seem to get less care and more abuse and keep running anyway. I guess the limit will come when you can no longer get parts and supplies to maintain them. I don't know if that answers your question or not, but those are my thoughts on the subject.

Happy Boating.
JB
