How many amps? 1980 75HP

How many amps would a starter draw on my outboard when cranking it up? <br /><br />I ask because I want to get a battery switch. There are 2 models...1 is 200 amp max and the other is 500 amp max. Obviously the 500 amp is more expensive(twice as much). Is there a way to test this? <br /><br />Also is it better to switch the + or the - lead. I was going to switch the - lead.

Most chrysler starters draw about 170amps, but as they get weaker or burn up they can draw 400amps. that is the point where you might need a heavier duty battery switch. bret<br /><br /> If you need further assistance please email me @ forcepower01@yahoo.com. thanks,Bret
