The guys that say I bought a used boat for so much and sold it for more are missing the point,it's what it cost new and will it appreciate over time ? Anyone can get a amazing deal and flip it whenever they want for the going rate and make a buck.Does that mean the item actually appreciated in market value,no.

My '52 cost $800 new. (boat, motor & trailer). According to the calculator, the 800 would have $6812.74 buying power in 2012. The boat is appraised at $10,000. Look at it that way and the boat appreciated.

If you had invested the 800 60 years ago at an average interest rate of 5%, you would now have about $15,000 in the bank. Or, you could have invetsed in the stock market and got lucky and have half a million now. Or, lost a bunch of it.

If you invest your $, presumably you have money in the bank and maybe that makes you feel happy. But you wouldn't have a boat. What would the value of 60 years of boatrides be? Even if the boat were worth nothing now, $13 a year is a paltry sum to invest in a boat, even in 1952 dollars.

Moral of the story - some things are life and death scenarios. The boat is much more important than that. Buy new, keep it a long time and forget about what its worth. Kids in trouble = $$$. Kids fishing on the boat = priceless.

Yup. A dollar in 1946 was worth about $12.50 today.
Here is a neat calculator.

What kind of value does 66 years of family fun and good times add?

My 74 Arabian cost ~10k new, same as a new Cadillac. So in 2012 dollars it is $48,846.75, about the same as a stripped Cadillac today.

the only boat that you could bank on appreceating is an old woodie barrel back or a riva.

other than that....buy gold....it will go up more

I'm not surprised to see Whalers appreciate in some cases.

As for more general boats, of the examples of someone selling for more than he paid, I don't think that happens with new boats. You can't make up that initial dip.

No one ever really accounts for the cost, especially in time, to fix up a boat, when they sell one "for a profit."
And that is not an example of "increased in value."

But they hold "value" as far as utility goes--plenty of 30 year old boats doing fine out there; lots and lots of 20 year olds adn 10 years old is "almost new." You certainly can't say that about cars.

Not necessarily. All depends on how well you take care of it.

My 32 year old full size Towcar is driven lightly, always garaged and never driven in snow. Not a show car by any means. it is a daily driver, except Winter. To keep true value insurance on it my carrier requires appraisals every 3 years. This past Summer it was appraised at just a tad over what i paid for it new in 1980.

Now, did it appreciate? I dunno. As said before, put the $ in the bank and you would have more - but you wouldn't have a car that you drove for 32 years either.

If you are selling, it's worth more.

If you are buying, it's worth less.

I paid $3100 for my 1966 Boston Whaler Sakonnet 16, (SUNSHINE) new, in 1967. I sold her in 1983 for $6500. If she were for sale today she would probably still bring 6 to 7K.

From the calculator link above:

$3,100.00 in 1967 had the same buying power as $9,196.35 in 1983.

Annual inflation over this period was 7.03%.

I think the bigger story here is how inflation eats away at the value of the dollar and presumably that's just core inflation.

Dont forget the maintenance cost of preserving the boat over time. A boat is something you spend a sum on, constantly put more into, and loose a sum on when your done with it - like an ex wife.
